I swapped the L/U on my 1974 70hp Evinrude. I took the '74 L/U off and put the '77 on. Now when I shift it is backwards. Forward is reverse and reverse is forward. Did install the L/U wrong? Is it safe to run it this way?

You have to have the linkage from the other motor as well for it to work; everything from the shift lever to the shift rod must be swapped.

It will not last long at all running the way you have it.

Thank you Sir,

After paying attention to the details.........I see the difference now, thanks. Next question is how do I convert? Can I just use the parts already on hand? Are their directions on how to do this?
