lower unit swap on a 30hp Yamaha

I was out running a river, testing some prop speeds for a friend of mine on his boat. I heard a load smack and look back just in time to see my new prop flying in the air. So I pull up the engine to find the back half of the lower unit is gone. So after saying "$*#&$^&*@$, *&#(*$ and &*#@$^@$" I started calculating the cost of repairing my buddys motor. Then I remembered that the basket case 30ELF I bought for $100 came with an extra lower unit. :D

So my question is. Will a lower unit from a long shaft 1989 30ELF work on a short shaft 1987 30SH?

If so, what are some of the things I should look at replacing while I have it apart?

Thanks for any help you can give.

You will need to change out the driveshaft and the shift shaft to make work. Be the perfect time to reseal and replace the water pump.

Thanks Ray,
I have a book on order but was wondering what people like to use as a sealant on the yamaha motors for the lower unit?

on the gaskets and static orings I use quicksilver perfect seal, on the seal OD's I use OMC adhesive M or 3M super weather strip adhesive.
be surre the seal lips face the correct direction and are positioned at the correct depth. measure the seal depths before removal as most manuals dont specify it. always use a new pinion nut and the correct drive shaft holding socket.
