I have a 1966 9.8hp (ser#2088397). Does anyone know if a lower unit from a 9.8hp (ser#1454898) will fit? It would solve some problems for me. Thanks!

Try it, it shouldn't take more than 15 minutes to find out.

Thanks Nos4r2! The only problem is that the lower unit isn't here. I'm trying to save myself the hassle of getting it and then finding out it won't work. capt1992

Are you sure about the first 1? That would make it just before the start of the first line of 9.8's (1963). I'm pretty sure the 1966 motor would have the leg they used until 1974. So up to and including 1973 should work.<br />Eric

Thanks Eric B. The guy says it's a 9.8hp but when I checked the ser# I came up with 10hp for the older lower unit. I appreciate your info on units up through 1973 being a possible fit. capt1992

Re: lower unit swap

Check out oldmercs.com to compare serial numbers. It seems like that serial number would be a 1960 Merc 100, 10 hp and the "unusual" automatic transmission--which should be avoided. I have a 1962 Merc 110. When I needed gears a few years back I learned that the early 110's used straight gears, the later ones used curved-tooth gears (not sure about the terminlolgy here) so the gears were not interchangeable. I don't know if the entire LU would be or not. The good news for you is that there are more of the later than the earlier ones. Sorry not to be more help on that. Good luck!

Oops, the 1454898 would be 1961, not 1960. The Merc 110 series started with 1470349 in 1962. I think the straight-cut gears might have been only used in 62-63, after which the motors went from Cloud White to Phantom Black, although I an not certain about when the change on those gears happened, it might have been as late as mid-1965 as nearly as I can tell from the parts lists at http://www.mercruiserparts.com/selectModels2.asp?type_id=MERC.

Re: lower unit swap

The older lower unit is indeed "cloud white" from the picture the guy sent me. I was pretty sure that the early sixties motors used straight cut gears. Anyway, I'm going to look around for a sure thing. Like you said, there's more of 'em around. Thanks motor Boat Bill.
