Had a difficult time installing a 70 hp lower unit and took a time out to think how to make the job easier, found Three 3/8 bolts 4 1/2 inches long; cut the heads off and bolted into motor leg to use a guide. really helped line up the lower unit.
just thought I would share the tip.

Re: lower unit tip

Thanks for sharing. Although I do mine differently, instead of using studs like you did, I actually use the long bolts to hold it in place and then try to align the tube, shift rod and the drive shaft. The darn thing just gets heavy while trying to align all three holes. As soon as I get full alignment then I push it all the way up with one hand and the other hand with one of the bolts to hold it again in place.

Being weak after my rotator cuff surgery, when installing my 40hp lower unit, I also made up a piece of flexible rubber hose to slide on the shift rod to guide it into it's hole, then when the lower unit is nearly there, you can pull the rubber hose off from the top, and you're golden.
