well, now I'm really sad. Had a beautiful afternoon off of work yesterday and payback is a bear!

looks like I hit something under the surface of the water, I don't remember anything specific but take a look at the pictures.

There is a mashing metal sound when you turn the prop by hand like a tooth is missing from a gear in the lower unit.

2 questions on my 1984 Force 125 outboard:

1. Is this kind of thing repairable or should I just look for a used lower unit? and if used is the way to go, any ideas where I might find one?

2. would this kind of thing cause abnormally high fuel consumption or is that another problem?

Thanks in Advance!

Jeff

Since your housing is cracked, I would look for a used or rebuilt one-- cheapest way to go is proabably a used one on ebay

Re: Lower Unit ussues

Thanks guys!

I think I found a unit on ebay that will fit with a buy it now of $399 plus $50 to ship. I'm just waiting for a confirmation from the seller that it will fit.

I got a quote on a re-manufactured unit for $1200 + shipping... considering I only spend $1800 on the boat, that is not going to happen! :)

Any other suggestions on where to look for a used one?

ebsworj - what is your plan to fix yours?

Thanks!
Jeff

450$ not bad --
- Did you also look on ebay for the whole motor? I bought a used powerhead in good condition for 430 (incl shipping) - two days later found a whole motor that ran but with a bad lower unit for $300--

Email Twin City Outboard if your deal dont go down on ebay. Tell them the year and the model number and if you can attach a photo of your lower unit. Usually they want the part there to match it but hopefully with enough information they can help you out. They are a huge outboard motor grave yard. I will bet they have one.

Re: Lower Unit ussues

thanks for the advice guys, I spoke with the ebay guy on the phone, got him to lower the price so it's $409 shipped to my door. I'll have it middle of next week.

I'll keep twin city outboard in mind next time there's an issue... we all know there's always something next ;)

Do you have any contact information for them?

twincityoutboard dotcom no online inventory, so you have to email or call them.
