Well, took the plunge last night and attempted to replace the impeller. Apparently, I have 1984-1989 Mariner 60HP 2-stroke, 3cyl outboard. I removed the 3 bolts near the prop and the two locknots towards the back of the motor. Ever so slightly, I have been prying around trying to break it free. I can get up to 1/2 gap on the prop side, but when I do the other side is basically shut. After working on it for a couple hours last night, sprayed some PB, take that back, 1/2 bottle of PB later, I let it sit. I noticed in a recent post they were talking about the speedo tube. Does this apply to my case as well. The serial of the motor is A111055, and cannot find ANY info on the web.

Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance for the help.

While you speedo tube needs to be disconnected that not whats holding the unit it's stuck on the shiftshaft or driveshaft. Try to move the unit up and down to lossen the crud thats holding it, just trying to pry it down don't dislodge what ever is holding it and sometimes the jiggling will.

Re: Lower Unit woes 60HP mariner

Hey Laddies,

First of all good morning. Had my first cup of coffee. Now I'm ready to attack this L/U again. thanks for the quick reply as well. I did wiggle it back and forth, up and down, and side to side. I'm just soooo leary that there is something holding it. Should I disconnect the middle bolt towards the top on the backside? or just keep at it. My manual should be here today or next week. It's just been sooo nice out, I want to get back out there. The whole problem that started this project was the motor boggs down when it's in the H2o and not when it's out of the water. I was told this might be due to overheating. It runs fine for about 100yds or so then starts bogging down. Anywho, I'll keep at it wiggling it around. Thanks again for the help! GREAT FORUM!

just make sure that ur wedging it evenly all around, otherwise its going to be hard to get it apart. if can get to open 1/2 inch all around then theres nothngi holding it back. just keep wedging it evenly all around. when u get 1/2 inch gap, there should be a solild area at the very tip of the lower unit on both end. put a pry bar in and work it LIGHTLY evenly. that's how i got mine apart. i suggest u read and look at the pics on my post.

Finally, after three days I was able to get it off! Thanks for the tip. Worked like a champ.
