lower unit woes.
ok, first off, a little history on this 65 merc (unknown year but id say late 70s early 80's?? maybe, it is kinda old).
My neighbor was going to haul this little bass boat off to the dump but i talked him into letting me have it instead. he says the problem started last time he took it to the river, he parked on a sandbar and stayed all day with the motor down in the sand. when he started to leave he had revs but no gears. he had taken the lower unit off and gave up when he bought his new boat.
Here is what i know and can tell you from what i see. first thing, the prop is removed and i was looking at the plastic nut thing that is up against the carrier unit and it is cocked really bad. also, looking down into the case at the carrier, it looks like the entire carrier unit has slipped back (towards the prop) about 1/8".
here is what i did so far. to begin with no matter where you turned the shift rod, the drive shaft would not spin the prop shaft. I got the plastic nut out and the threads are ruined. next i took a wood bock and whacked the prop shaft and sure eunf, 1 whack moved it back in about 1/16". now one shaft will turn the other but there is a catch. i can pull out on the prop shaft and there is about 1/4" play and when it is out the gears disengage. as long as i keep inward pressure on it then it will stay engaged.
now that the plastic nut is out of the way, what else do i need to do to get the carrier pulled out? Or, should i even worry about pulling the prop shaft and instead, put it in the press and mash it it all the way back in and see if that fixes it. i think it might but imp concerned about the "end play" in the prop shaft itself.
If you guys can walk me through this i can take pictures along the way and we can compile a tutorial.
