Lower unit won't come all the way off

I have a '68 85hp Evinrude that needs a water pump replaced. I took the lower set of bolts off and the lower unit comes down about 1 inch then stops. Is there something up toward the top of the driveshaft that would cause it to hang? It sounds like something hits something when it stops coming down.

Disconnect the shift rod.

I have a 76 johnson 70hp that I just replaced the ware pump on and had the same problem with. Not exactly sure where the shift rod connection is on yours but I'll give you a starting place to look, it should connect just under the powerhead/carbs, it's real tough to get to so be patient and you'll get it off.
