Just picked up a 1984? 35 hp mecury (serial number A153817). The lower unit is gone. How do I verify year, and what lower units will fit?

You can use just about any lower unit that fits a 35, 40, 45, classic 50, 60, or older (pre 83) 70 HP gearcase. The 60 and 70 will have a different ratio and require a prop change.<br />Were talking from late 70's to 1988 or 9 when they dropped that size from the lineup.

I have found a lower unit off a 35HP thats supposed to fit 1970 thru 1975, and one off a 1997 40 HP. Either of these work? I have to buy a prop in any case.

The older 35 are a shorter case. It's shorter between the cavitation plate and the prop shaft, the 1997 is a different style design altogether. Keep looking, you'll find one.
