Hi All,<br /><br />I have a 1979 Chrysler 70 HP outboard. I just finished soaking, clenaing, and re-installing <br />the three carbs. I was getting ready to try firing it up, lifted the engine to put my giant garbage can under it, and<br />noticed lower unit lube leaking from the water intake vents. It only happens when the engine is tilted up. Is this a seal leak? Thanks for the help

Hi Trekker<br />What makes you think it is L\U oil? What dose it look like? How much? Have you checked or changed you gear lube lately?

Hi alcan,<br /><br />Thanks for the reply. It's definitely lower unit lube. Its the same yellow to brown color of the lube I put in it. Smells the same too. It's not milky, but then I haven't run it two much either. The boat and motor has been in "storage" for 4-5 years, but the lower unit oil has been changed every year with the hopes of getting the engine runing (carb problem). I aquired the boat from my parents in Sept., and changed the lower unit oil in April. I've been working on the boat itself since then. Got the boat finished, tested the engine and found the carb problem. I fixed the carb problem, she purrs like a kitten now, but I'm concerned about the gear box.

on the lower unit there is a top main seal under the water pump housing.had the same problem with my 120 hp. part went for about $80.00 bucks.better be safe than sorry,easy job hardest part is getting the lower unit back up.
