Took my boat out for the first time this year. Had it tuned up and started great. Idled great. Went through a channel to get to open water and ran great. Got to open water, started to get out of the hole and motor revved then boat went no where. RPMs went up but boat went no where. It will run at about 7mph but no more than that. Thinking it is a lower unit problem. Did not have this problem on a fishing trip in October. It is a 1988 Johnson 88spl.Any diagnosis and treatment with estimated costs?

Re: Lower Unit?

i also have and 88 88 spl. you have spun the prop. the prop is made of 2 metal hubs, with a rubber bushing in between. the bushing has given out. it can be rebuilt at a prop shop or a new one. if you haven't replace you impeller, it's long over due.

Sounds like a spun hub on your propeller.......you can check that by making a mark on the hub and on the prop and run the motor again. If the marks don't line up, then the hub is spun and you need to get it re-hubbed or get a new prop. A prop is going to vary in $ depending on the material and style etc.
