put lower unit back together after putting new ay bearing in and new inpleller. now when i shift gears back and forth they work fine but when i leave it in forward or reverse and spin prop manually than go back to handle gear shift it won't go into reverse.than i can manually turn prop again than it's fine again. it's a 1985 johnson longshaft 25 hp model # cj25rcos any thought's on this.thanks

It sounds normal.
It's a dog clutch and it will only engage when the dogs are aligned so as to allow it.
Thats why you should not normally try to engage gear when the engine is not running
