If you take it easy and drive like an old lady, you will do just fine. If you drive "pedal on the wood" everywhere you go, I would not recommend them.

I have installed 5 outboard lowers.....One made it a year, SEI fixed it. It did not survive the second break in and sheared the prop shaft. Shaft and prop are at the bottom of the lake.

Two 30" yamaha lowers, both failed before 15 hrs. Both on the same boat. Two other other yamaha lowers..... the boats were sold and I have no info on them.

Many on this forum have used SEI units when theirs failed or broke. Pehaps the Yamaha SEI replacement drives don't stand up to use as the Alpha's apparently do.
I have read of folks running 400 HP through SEI Alpha's without issue. All it takes is a prudent hand on the throttle. You can break any thing if you pound it constantly.
You choose between $1300 for an SEI complete drive to around $800 for a lower half. I think a new Mercruiser Alpha is over $3000. If you want bulletrpoof get a Bravo conversion for even more. Or just don't take off at full throttle unless you are pulling a skier. It's ok to go wide open, just roll on up to it if you have big power.

SEI has many, many followers here. Tell us what you plan to use it on, and we can answer appropriately. If we know what engine combo, I'll move this to the associated section too. Good luck.
