Re: lower unit

Check for spun hub in the prop or if you have a spare prop, try that..

Re: lower unit

Drano....Take your prop off and look at the rubber hub on the back of it. If it has spun you will see the scrape marks on it and it may be distorted and popped out of it's seat. If it has spun you can take it to a prop shop and they can re-hub it for you. Good Luck.

Re: lower unit

I checked it does look like the hub twisted. Also when you have the motor in gear the prop shaft will still turn. Could akeeper have broken in the lower unit

Re: lower unit

It's a spun hub. Take to your local prop doc, he'll verify and fix it. If you're close to Ft. Worth, I'll recommend a good prop guy.

c/6
Hooty

Re: lower unit

Hooty i am pretty sure that the hub spun. If you look at it the rubber is not even with the shaft. My next question is why can you have the motor in gear and the prop shaft will still turn. could this be the clutch dog. Or when the hub went could something else have broken.

Thanks for your help

Re: lower unit

Are you saying that you can turn the prop shaft by hand, or that the prop shaft turns when you run the motor?

Re: lower unit

Drano....it usually takes a certain amount of torque to spin the hup without turning the prop. So...in slow speed, you can move some. But rev it up and the prop against the water creates torque and spins the hub.

Get it rehubbed as suggested. It'll be OK.

Re: lower unit

If you can turn the prop shaft freely by hand while in gear, your immediate problem is probably not the prop. This would probably be a good time to think about troubleshooting the lower unit.

Re: lower unit

Before you condemn internal linkage or shift dawg in the lower unit insure that the shift cable is indeed actuating the shift arm which inturn is moving the shift rod to change gear position.Remove the shift cable from the shift arm and try to shift manually just using the shift arm.Bare in mind that if the engine is not running when attempting to shift that the propshaft will need to be turned while shifting to prevent binding of gears and linkage.

Re: lower unit

hello
remove the drain and sample a bit of the oil or just change it. look for metal on the magnet
if thr likage is in fact moving the shift shaft and the shaft is in an ingear position and you can still turn the propshaft something is not good. could mean a broken driveshaft or a broken pinion
good luck and keep posting

Drano, if you can't figure it out and you want to, pull it down here and I'll take a look at it. I'm not far from I10 and Huebner just as you come into San Antonio. Free advice.
