ok guys, here is my new problem-i replaced the water pump and installing the lower unit but will not go all the way.it stops about 2 " short and i turn the flywheel and it goes about 1 more inch but still short about 1 inch.anyone have any ideas? i made sure that i did not pull the shaft up any(like my manual said not to do(or i will have to tear the unit apart).i had a problem removing the impeller and did have to lift the shaft enough to slide a small tool under the impeller and lightly tap the top of the shaft.the splines are ok thank you for the help (1984 johnson 35hp)long shaft

Re: lower unit

looks like your post fell through the cracks. I had the same problem replacing my lower unit ('75 50 hp) As I recall, you havr to be careful that the o-ring at the top of the shaft does not become dislodged. I got mine back on through time, patience and force. Wiggle it around a bit as you push up. I finished my reinstall by using the bolts to close the final gap.
Good luck

Re: lower unit

if you grease up the splines and do it exxessive and put to much on top it will give you a hard time sliding in the shaft.
might be it??????????

reeldutch
