Reading all this, I believe my stiff shift and resulting problems may be binding gear thrust rod at the gear case top surface.
I have the book, and it deals with lowering the gear case, but it doesn't say anything about releasing and engaging the actual drive shaft, which must be going through there somewhere.
Is there something to do about the drive shaft when doing this?

The Drive shaft is a splined, slip fit. The shift rod usually needs to be disconnected, under the carbs. Give us the year of the motor and we can advise on this.

That still had the bolt you remove from the clevis. Pop the port side pan off (takes about a minute) and the bolt will be right there, very easy to see & remove. You'll fight it for a long time if the pan stays on.

Once you get the gearcase off see if the shift rod moves easy. Be sure to spin the propshaft when trying to shift. If the rod moves easily the problem is in the midsection. If the rod is hard to move the O rings in the shift rod cover need to be changed, no big deal.

If the rod moves easy, look up thru the midsection. If the shift rod hole does not line up there is a build up of salt and corrosion behind the lower motor mounts.

Many thanks to Dhadley and Chris.
The lower unit came off with minimal hassle and sure enough the gear shift rod was really stuck in the area of the two o-rings.
It now shift from the lever with only finger pressure.

I don't know if you guys are still on the line, but putting the lower unit back up was more of a trick then I expected. Can the pro's do this single handed?
Holding up this heavy item while making sure the water pipe etc engage properly seems to be very tough, plus if you wobble a bit, you are bound to tip the inner exhaust funnel out of place.
How do you make this easy?

Thanks to the help on this forum my LU is back on and appears to be ok.
I am now replacing the remote and cables.
Just one question. When I had the LU off, I tested the shift by rotating the drive shaft and holding back the prop. The shift was really easy and forward and reverse worked well.
I noticed that the prop shaft would only rotate one way. If you tried to rotate the shaft the other way it was not possible.
Is this OK?

best to use 2 people....prop should spin either way...drive shaft (the long one) should only be spun clockwise or risk damage to impeller.
