I am looking for a good chart plotter that will tell me all of the standard navigation elements. But i am also looking for a unit that will help me find marinas, ramps, food, etc......

I know the garmin units do this do the lowrance units as well there manuals are so bad i cant tell.

i have the hds-10 unit with insight. When using it in the chesapeake bay are. It shows the marina's,ramps and that. One thing i like about the lowrance unit is if i move the cursor over a marina and press the info button it gives me telephone number for the place and also what services they provide

I'm looking at Lowrance, but have to agree, I can't make heads or tails out of the descriptions. Is the one with insight the way to go? I boat on the Chesapeake & Potomac.

I am also curious if these units guide you to your destination like the auto units do, from the lowrance manual (which stinks) it looks like it draws a straight line and it is up to you to navigate there?

Lowrance doesn't have an auto-route feature. Need a Garmin for that

Good to know. Does it route you through channels and around rocks!

That i couldn't tell ya. I've only had the unit for a couple of months. I know the channels are well marked along with known dangerous areas

No, it doesn't. I just bought one today and specifically asked that question. Was told I'd have to pay a lot more for that capability. Still, this looks like a great unit which will tell me where I'm at on the water and find fish.

 too late for me! I hooked the Lowrance up to a battery at home this morning & played with it for an hour or so. Found my location pretty quickly & the included chart looks great!

Yeah i agree - I did the same thing so i am keeping the lowrance. Plus the more I think about it I am sure that it is MUCH safer to use situational awareness and visuals than following a purple line on your screen.

You don?t navigate using a course line?

One would think a course calculated to accommodate your keel depth and bridge height would be much safer than one that sent you across an island to get to your destination. People using auto-pilot would certainly agree ;)

Yes but it would not be that hard to make hat an auto-routing capability. i am sure they have not done it because they don want to be sued. long live the land of innovation and freedom.

I have the same unit as you. For routing there is a "page" for that(i believe its the page at the top or press up key), it doesnt draw a line from point a to point b(i had one humminbird that had that feature) but it has a line on the navigation page that as long as you stay on it it takes you right to the coordinate. I love this feature on the 5 DSI. The down scan is awesome. The only downside i found is no fish alarm. but its not for eveyrone anyways lol.
