Interesting stuff guys. I just hope they are doing it for the right reasons.
I keep thinking back to when VP tried to go high tech...using the horrendous 4 cylinder 16v 151 and 171 engines. Came from the Volvo cars (not that that’s a problem in general) but they just weren’t suited for the marine environment. Timing belts...yuk.
I have long considered the GM 4.3l the best marine engine in the world. Pound for pound superb. Simple, cheap to maintain and run. Yet to hear of one fail, that wasn’t down to poor maintenance.
Lets hope these new engines can compare in years to come.

Probably the reason VP stuck with the GM offerings. Pretty brave of Merc to go down the all new engines hiway.

Just doesn’t all make sense to me. A brave move. Likely much more expensive to fix too. Was always one of the big attractions in the diesel v petrol argument. Petrols although dearer to run....so much cheaper to maintain and god forbid repair or replace.

Was looking at the directly comparative new 4.5 mpi and older 5.0 mpi.
Anything over half throttle and the 5.0 is gaining on fuel figures and even betters the 4.5 at wot. It likely betters it further down the revs too if you consider the 5.0 will likely see a the same cruise speed at lower rpm.
It’s just madness.
Let’s see how the new lightweight engines get on after a decade of the “air don’t freeze” winterising technique many apply to the old engines. Not sure they would stand it without antifreeze filling every year.

The new VP/GM all aluminum engines are fresh water cooled as standard configuration, almost have to be due to materials. Looks like they made the heat exchanger draining pretty simple too. Should be a step forward towards fewer catastrophic engine failures due to poor winterization procedures.

I asked a Zen master, and they gave their standard answer..."We'll see." ;)

I am still doing sleuthing in the background on that "variable" HP Volvo 200 version of the 200/240/280 family of 4.3. One reviewer said "you have access to that 280 when you take off" when describing the VP200 model in the boat they were testing.

Here is a link to the video where that is talked about from :20 to :36...:
