1988 Larson with a 4.3 OMC cobra. I opened up to very top of the lower unit(some sort of oil/lube) it was clean, however it was kind of yellow in collor and a little foamy. I had just run her through the gears.

Sounds right. It was aerated if you had just run it.You can see many tiny bubbles .Foamy is something totally different.Water intrusion will make it foamy.Charlie

I guess you will have to ask the person that put that lube in what it was, no one could guess what it was by just the color.
If you aren't sure of what it is, or if it's the right stuff, replace it with the proper gear lube for your drive.

Another thing, I sure hope you put no seals on the top cover, it wasn't designed to be taken off just to look at the oil. That's what the dipstick is for.

It was serviced by an OMC dealer for winterizing last. And the cover has an oring seal not a gasket. where's the dipstick for the lower unit?

Yes, I am aware the seal is an Oring, not a gasket, but it's still not meant to be reused. Even orings get flattened out and will leak if reused.
Call the dealer and ask what gear lube he used in the drive when he winterized it, he should have it written down on the work order.
The dipstick is in the to of the cover. #60 in the picture below.

Time for the 'crackle test'.

Get some of the suspect oil and about 1/2 fill a tablespoon (that the big one the wife uses when she's cooking cakes and stuff). Then get a cigarette lighter and heat it up. if there's water in it, it'll crackle as the water boils off. If no water, it'll just get hot and fumes will come off. Please don't sniff the fumes :D I don't want a lawsuit to land on my doorstep..... also be warned, the oil and the spoon will be hot and you should be careful with them until they cool. Best to also wear a glove so as not to risk a burnt hand, that will be holding the spoon, and The Surgeon General warns that smoking can harm your unborn baby, so please use the lighter only to heat the oil, in the spoon.

Have I missed anything guys? (Can't be too careful when giving advise you know)

Chris........... :D :D :D

Yep, you missed one!

Don't run with that spoon in your mouth..........

I don't know why, my mother used to always say that to the little ones.
Besides that, it would probably taste terrible after cooking gear lube.....Uch. :p

Hey Don, I'm missing #'s 2,3,4,& 7 on my 3.0 cobra. Can water enter the drive if I run without them? I believe there some kind of foam insert that attach to the cover next to the bolt holes. Can i use silicone instead? Don't mean to jump in on someone else's thread.
