The where I got. it's the what one I need help with. Do I get the sierra one in the boat store for 1977 to 1988 85 hp outboards? I don't see one listed specifically for the L drives. mine is an 89 I think but aren't the power heads the same on almost all the force setups.

You better check with Frank on this one! I think the heads changed sometime around the 1988C year model!

Different exhaust and base plate for an L-drive.

I got to look in to paper catalog for Sierra or check the Merc site.

from mercruiserparts.com
27-809748A1 GASKET SET $173.08

part # does not cross to a Sierra #

All Force 3 cyl 70 to 95 HP use the same headgasket

The L-Drive is a special creature, the overall design is the same as Force outboards, however, baseplate, blocks, cranks, exhaust all are special design for the L-Drive.

The major difference in Gasket sets are the baseplate and exhaust plate. If you can get a generic gasket set substantially cheaper elsewhere then check and see what the base gasket and 2 exh gaskets will cost you from a dealer.

maybe I will do as I have done on some old motorcycles and make new gaskets myself. The exhaust gaskets should be fairly easy. Base gasket also.

only thing I couldn't make if necessary is the head gasket.

Wouldn't happen to know what thickness gasket material they use would you?

A steady hand some paint and a set of hollow punches can recreate just about any gasket ever made

Don't know what thickness of material, however remember there is 2 exhaust gaskets, one on each side of the plate, a warped plate OR poor gasket seal can allow water to enter the exhaust ports and destroy cylinders/pistons.

Make SURE that it is sealed.

I have an 89 force L-drive 85-90hp that I had to replace the head gasket on and got it at a local boat shop. You are correct about 87/88 to 92/93 force 85hp L-drives are all the same. Was looking for some other stuff the other day at Napa and found out they have all the gaskets for my engine. The head gasket was priced @ $41.00 and change. No tax in Oregon.
