What do you need? Brushes and bushings might be available from a Mercury dealer, or from a starter rebuilder. Many times it is worn brushes and a dirty end cap that cause starter malfunctions take it apart and check/clean.

Yeah man, I found one online brand new for $112.00 shipped. But, Id still like to take a look at the old boy if it is worth a shot. The starter motor engages, but the gear extends for a quick second and then will disengage from the flywheel. Other times it will just spin and not engage at all. I brought it to advanced auto today and it would engage for a second and then slowly slide back down and disengage. Guy told me it was on its last leg, but still useable. I just didnt want to take a chance cause it has already spun without engaging when I was on the water. I had to tap it with a hammer to get it to engage. So between that and a fried stator that doesnt charge the battery quick enough, we have some problems. Been working on this motor from the low unit all the way up to the stator for 3 1/2 months and Im real close to having a really reliable motor for this spring.

Take it apart and fix it, I've done a few of them and they're easy. I even had to file down some generic brushes to fit the holder.
How are your battery connections and cables?

All connections are sweet. I took the starter in and had it checked at advanced and we are sure it is on its way out. I will try and clean it up and keep it around as a backup when I get a chance. For $112.00 on a new one you cant go wrong. I have more money than time right now. :)
