Lund 1660 Speed/Planing w/25hp?

Hi Folks - Brand new here and hoping to get some advice from Lund owners. I am seriously considering a new Lund 1660 Classic rigged with a 25hp Mercury 4-stroke EFI, power trim and tilt.<br /><br />Due to horsepower restrictions on one of the large reservoirs here in W. Massachusetts, the 25hp is the biggest powerplant allowed. I am wondering if anyone here has experience with this hull/power combination? Does the boat get on plane adequately? Is it borderline, or really up there? Can it handle two guys and gear and still plane? What's the estimated mph?<br /><br />I'm hoping someone can give me good info. Thanks!

I can't say for yours specifically, but generally I'd expect mid 20s to around 30mph. A bare 16' rowboat would be no trouble, and maybe a tad over 30 with just you. Start adding floor, livewell, and other weight and it gets borderline. That motor is a good workhorse, but not particularly "snappy".

Lund makes aluminum boats so I assume we are talking about that and that it is a semiV (nice and light). And 1660 implies that it is 16' long. We used to plane out wooden planked 14' boats, 2 people with gear, with a 10 hp.<br /><br />Matter of fact, I had a 7.5 hp Merc on a 12' john and that sucker would scream. <br /><br />Now planing speed is around 17-18 mph for boats like that, lower mph to plane for a flatbottomed john aluminum.<br /><br />That's not very fast and your 25 should have no prblem getting you and a companion plus gear up to 22-25 mph which is a nice little clip. When I was a kid we waterskied behind an 18 Rude on a wooden 14' boat. Not fast, but fast enough to stay up.<br /><br />If it's sluggish, either get rid of unnecessary items, carry less fuel/ice/beer(grin) or whatever and move some of the load farther forward.<br /><br />You aren't worried about hull performance at that hp level and a little more up front makes a world of difference in planing with a small motor.<br /><br />Enjoy<br /><br />Mark

Welcome to iboats Guy Smiley.<br /><br />Got some bad news for you.<br /><br />This is not a bare bones or lightweight boat !!!<br />The 1660 Classic is a big boat, not a utility boat, rated for up to 75 hp.<br />It weighs 785# for the tiller model, and 900# for the DC model.<br /><br />Now add 200# for motor and battery, 45# for fuel, 400# for 2 small guys and gear.<br /><br />1450# !!<br />figure another 100# for a trolling motor and battery.<br /><br />A cooler, or a full livewell, or another small guy, add another 100#<br /><br />You will not plane out with a 25hp.<br />You will not be happy.<br /><br />Scan the used boat ads on the internet, most of these boats have 50hp or more.<br />And resale value will be way down if it is underpowered.<br /><br /><br />You better start looking at a 16 WC DLX tiller model if all you can have is 25 ponies.<br /><br />And it will save you a bunch of money too.<br /><br />16 WC DLX photo below.
