I'm looking at a 1988 Lund Baron 2100. My concern is that it has the OMC (Cobra outdrive) 120hp I/0, and whether this really is under-powered for a 2100+ pound boat.

Anyone have this setup, and how's it perform? (The engine has been thoroughly gone over professionally in the last year).

thanks

Re: Lund Baron 2100

My friend retired in 1988 at the age of 54. He purchased this exact boat, and has fished it on lake Erie ever since. This boat logs as many hours per year as most charter boats. He would have traded it 2 years ago when he finally had engine problems that required a rebuild, but there are no new IO's only outboards. If he could have gotten a new barron with an I.O. then I would have sold my 88 tyee (with 85 hp outboard) and bought his Barron. The thing is plenty fast upper 30's mph and more economical and reliable then my set-up.
If you don't want that boat, let me know, so I can look at it!

Re: Lund Baron 2100

I have an 88 Baron 2100 with the cobra 3 L 140 setup. It is the original motor and inboard. I fish lake erie whenever I can with it. Compression good on all cylinders with the 13.75 - 17 prop I can do 30 mph with self only and 3 batterys. I do notice a significant drop in proformance as you load the weight. While the boat is rated for 10/11 people I would not want more then 4 and it is perfect for 2 to fish. I trailer 120 miles to get to the lake and love the economy of the light weight alluminum hull combined with the motors fuel economy. I also have a 9.9 honda four cycle for trolling and fishing on the 10 hp restricted reservoirs in ohio. The 9.9 will push it at 6mph with self only on board. Much to my surprise I also have an old 38 lb thrust 12 volt trolling motor that moves it to my satisfaction. Had to replace the floor wood but I love the boat. Bought it fairly cheap with the the idea that I would have to replace the motor and drive. Very plesently surprized to date. Get ahold of the proper year cobra manual for the engine if you buy. Good luck, you can't have mine!
