Lund Baron Project

And so begins the first stage of a long winter project. My first hurdle is how to slide my rotten transom out when the gunnels extend over it. I included a photo that hopefully shows what I'm faced with. Would anyone advise against cutting about 2" off the back of both gunnels and welding them back on? Any other thoughts?

Appreciate the advise.

Re: Lund Baron Project

I dont know your boat but after investigating all other possible ways to do it, that is exactely what I would do. I bet it would be very resonble to have a good welder put them back on and from the looks of the metal its plenty thick enough to take a butt weld. If it is just a matter of putting those small corners back on, you could put them back so that you would never know they were cut.
I dont recommend making the transom narrower. Although someone who knows your specific boat model may say you can get away with the transom not going all the way to the corners inside the hull. I think I would rather have all the support the OEM designed in to it.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I'm on the right track. Posted some more pics of the project. Building the boat cradle was the easy part. The rest is messy I know from watching the forum.

Re: Lund Baron Project

I do know that a few of the Starcraft restorations encountered the same problem They mad small cuts and bent the aluminum back and then bent it back when done.

How much does the transom corner cap cover? You really can not tell it has been done if it is done with care. There is no real support provided by that aluminum covering..... it is not structural.

Re: Lund Baron Project

Bob VT, the corner cap only covers about an inch of the gunnel. I did note the Starcraft guys bent theirs up, but my gunnels are boxed. Learned a lot from Starcraft posts, but sure wish there were more Lund projects to look at.
thanks.

Re: Lund Baron Project

A few cuts and bends...... I was just wondering if the caps are large enough to cover the cuts? I was thinking that cutting it inside the 90 degree corners only enough to let that board pass by.

Re: Lund Baron Project

It has been almost a year since my last post. Basketball injury sunk the project last winter...but
I'm back at it. Would sure appreciate the guidance from the forum to turn this boat into a watercraft once again instead of a tin can.

Transom did come out...with water soaked inside that made it unbelievably heavy.

What should I do about this corrosion? I don't think it's deep, but I know Murphy very well.

It is nice to see you back in action. There are several corosion stoppers out there you could use. I would try my local paint store and see if they have something.

Re: Lund Baron Project

Nice project you've got going on here. Lund restos are pretty rare since most folks keep them stored so well they don't need one:D

That rig has got some high sides, what size is the boat?

Given how much structural stringers are in that thing you could probably go 1/2" or 3/8" on the deck if you wanted to save some weight.

Is the foam all dry or is it gonna be replaced?

Re: Lund Baron Project

The boat is an 86 Baron 21 feet. I bought it in 2003 and used it a ton with a soft deck, rotten consoles and transom. Replaced the notorious 470 with a new 4.3 and alpha 1 a couple years back and it is time to replace structure. Every piece of wood taken out was used as a
template to trace and cut out new from 1/2 or 3/4 marine ply. It's a 40 piece jigsaw puzzle! Routered and sanded...up to my knees in dust. US Composites epoxy resin is going on everything.

I'll be sure to look into a corrosion inhibitor today, Frisco. Good thought.

Huron, I'm pretty satisfied with the integrity of the current floatation. Perhaps it's the only nightmare I will not have to deal with...but there are like 7225 other ones, right?

If the foam is dry that's great, the one big advantage of removing it would be to get some Gluvit on the interior rivets and seams.

If the boat doesn't leak, and your foam is all dry I'd leave it alone for sure:)

Maybe take some core samples to be sure prior to bolting the new deck down?

Your woodworking looks excellent, that new transom looks like it will fit perfectly.:)

Re: Lund Baron Project

Huron...I'll be amazed if the transom fits after epoxy. My 3/4 ply was slightly thicker than original, so that is the reason I made the router cuts where the I beams will bolt to it. It fits loose between the ibeams and outer skin, but hopefully epoxy will be just the right thickness to take up remaining space.
BTW, anyone care to recommend a good transom paint?

I decided on 1/2 inch deck too. First one lasted 25 years. We'll see how close this one comes

Lots of us have used Rustoleum enamel on the transom after it's been sealed in epoxy resin.

Pretty durable stuff and easy on the wallet.:)
