Re: Lund Nisswa Restoration

Man I have been stalled in boat building bigtime, started with work-a person quit with no notice so I have been pulling some 16 hr shifts, then I hired a guy to shingle the house so I had to spend half a day getting supplies for that, Topped off by May 1st is our annual "Paddle-Fish Snagging" trip that I had to pack up for, Great Fun! Montana/North Dakota Border where the yellowstone and little missouri meet, very short season, hopefully we will catch a few, will post some pix if we do.

So what have I gotten done since last Saturday on the boat
1. All Decking (Sole) pieces are triple waterproofed
2. Made the fuel Tank support and Triple waterproofed
3. Glassed in Bulkhead #2
4 Bulkhead #3 is PL'd in and curing

Wont get back on her until next week now, maybe get that second wind-needed a break anyway-and a beer or two-enty.

Hello,
May be to late for you to use this idea but I'll toss it in anyway.

On the back side of the decking you could use a t-nut (its a treaded insert that has spikess that grab the wood and keep it from spinning. They are installed fron the bottom. Be real easy to seal them. They are available in various sizes at most any box store like Home Depot.

Yeah, have fun.

I'm betting you'll be thinking of the boat work while sitting out fishing... it'll whet your appetite for more :)

Re: Lund Nisswa Restoration

quite the mouth on those things, eh? Must have been fun.

Say, I was thinking of the T nut thing too, but do they make them in Stainless steel? I'd be worried about eventual rusting out. At the very least, I'd want to coat the threads with something to seal it from water. Of course, why couldn't a person just over drill the holes, plug them with epoxy and then drill and tap?

One other thing that I noticed...how are you fastening the center of the deck to the boat?

Redfury; for the seat bases I am over size drilling and filling, then redrill, may use locknuts or those T-Nuts, I am going to check into them, either way they need to be stainless steel in my opinion, I have a website that TD provided on my home computer for the stainless T-nuts.
The center floor section, I have predrilled and filled holes in the stringers to mount aluminum rails.

Oops-
Paddlefish are a prehistoric fish, therefore I believe they taste like dinosaur, not sure though- ---LOL----
Coat it in spicy beer batter-small chunks-deep fry-chase em with a beer and they are pretty good-a bit fishy though-the key is to remove all red meat.

Your boat looks Sweeeeet on that trailer.

Re: Lund Nisswa Restoration

Purpose? Hinging the entire thing for storage or ??? I'd love to have the ability in my boat to have that, but my center stringer prevents that. If I were, I'd have to cut down my center stringer, put in a floor with drains at the bilge and put a hinged lid on it. Great place to store rods/life jackets, etc. My front seats have little storage due to the nature of this trihull, so it's at a premium.

After looking at all these boats, and realizing that there really isn't "one true hull design", I've started to reassess the use for my boat once I'm done with it. I think I'll be closer to the Bass Boat/family ski boat range, than a big water boat that can hit the shallows.

Any way you put it though, I just can't wait to see some of these "close to done" projects hit the water and stay floating :D

Set Backs in boat building production.
My son came down with the Flu, then I got the Flu, so that was basically 4 days gone, simutaneously getting my roof shingled, so of course many trips to the hardware store for more.

Got a bit done on the boat this week.
Floor Board seat base mount plate holes are overdrilled and filled.
Backing Plates for seat bases installed as well.
Forward storage area subfloor cut to fit, triple epoxied to water proof-PL'd in.
Transom Fittings all installed using 5200.

Funny thing... I guess the spring colds are going around. I was sidelined all last week for sickness too. I didn't do any shingling though, just mowed the lawn :)

Back at it!
Here are some pictures of the forward bulkhead storage areas, the area that is clamped in is the forward deck seat base doubler, this is how I fashioned my attempt to go "screwless" in the boat build.
That PL when used thin is great stuff!

That is a lot better than my patience. I would have it covered with epoxy and be done.
Excellent work.

Yes, very impressive work. It's almost going to be a shame to cover that up with a deck.

I wonder how many people have pieces of railroad rail in their shops?

Re: Lund Nisswa Restoration

Hey thanks for the encouragement, this site actually really helps a guy stay motivated, people who have not done a boat build have no idea how many man-hours go into this.
What matters is that it holds together for a long time to come.

Question for you guys.
All of that pretty stuff is going to get ruffed and scuffed and then primered and sprayed with Rhino liner, some areas such as in the storage compartments wont be covered, since it is not exposed to UV-Light much will it be OK to leave it as-is???

Working on the Transom cap today, the new Transom is thicker so I had to fabricate a new Aluminum cap.,

Lund
I use that stupid Railroad all-the-time, best part was I got it for $1.00 at a rummage sale years ago.

Oops, you should be the admission charger-great thread-large following.
