Lync & Sync for V6 merc

I have a 88' V6 200hp Merc. I just replaced the trigger assembly and have been informed that a lync & sync is in order, but the seloc manual's description is way too hard to follow...they bounce from one engine to the next without telling you (I just don't feel comfortable doing a lync & sync using the Seloc manual). I know Clams Casino has a great tutorial on doing a lync & sync on inline mercs, but what a about V6 mercs. I have the specs for the tune up, just need to know the procedure. If anyone has done one in the past and are willing to share with me your procedure, that would be fantastic.<br /><br />As always, thanks for the help-<br />Andy

I would like same info for my 89' 200hp merc. I agree with you about Seloc. I got a factory service manual from ebay that is alot better but doesent cover my exact year so I have been reluctant to use it. <br /><br />Ethan

A quick timing question... At about what RPM should the advance spark throttle lever begin to pull on the trigger arm. I think mine is doing it to early. At ~1800-2400 RPM the engine doesn't 'sound right' and seems to shakes a little. I think the spark advance is occuring to soon. Because it runs surperb in idle speeds and screams at WOT. Any opinions?<br /><br />-Andy

I have my own Merc manual, but have never done or tried to do the timing etc. I just like dinking around like most backyard mechanics. I have learned my lesson from time to time, if it isn't broke, don't try to fix it. <br />Looking at the pages, it covers 3 pages w/pictures, which will do more than anything, a picture is worth a 1000 words.<br />I don't have a scanner that works with this computer so can't help you there, but I think you should be able to figure it out with the bighammer link. Andy, there are 5 pages of pictures and instructions for a complete link/sink. None refers to a specific RPM for the advance spark to operate. That all comes into play with the adjustments. The picture shows 11/16" movement arc at the top. 1. With the engine in nuetral, hold throttle arm so that idle stop screw is against the idle stop. Crank engine w/starter motor(earlier they tell you to take out all the spark plugs and ground the leads so the engine won't start) and adjust throttle primary pickup screw to align specified throttle primary pickup mark on the timing decal w/timing pointer. Retighten nut of adjustment screw. It then says all adjustment should be verified w/outboard running and adjust as necessary, this is due to the advance characteristicts of individual ignition systems.<br />I guess that is why I leave such things to a trained mechanic who is familiar with these things. EFI's are differnet than carbed. They list special tools needed as Dial indicator gauge kit/service tac/ Timing light.<br />Mybook covers 1989-1990 Models 200 . 200 XRI Serial #s 0C100861-0C291519/ also 1889 135-thru 175 SKI<br />Hope this helped a little.

Thanks Gary,<br />after all that has been said, I've convinced a local 'legend' of a merc. mechanic to come down to my boat, do a lync & sync and at the same time walk me through his process. Once I've seen the process I will fell better about giving it a go myself<br />-andy
