Re: lync &sync
Take a close look at how the throttle linkage works. I *think* on your engine the spark advance gets stopped at about 1/3-3/4 throttle. That is to say, the armature plate stops turning. After that, I think it just continues to open the carburator's throttle plate.
So, if I'm right, link and sync doesn't really effect wide open throttle performance.
Make sure, though, that the armature plate is moving freely and that it reaches it's (non-adjustable) stop properly.
I had an engine once that had exactly the same symptoms - but the clicking was pretty faint. It turned out that the cracked ignition coils were arcing over at a particuliar RPM, so the engine would hit a plateu where it would misfire and not go any faster. They made beautiful sparks at pull start speeds though. A clicking could be heard which was the coil arcing over.
Make sure your pull start isn't hitting the flywheel too. That makes some pretty loud clicking!

PS - I had a look at my history. Somehow I end up replying to your questions a lot! What are the chances?
