Your better off mounting a Gas shock..the small ones they use for hatches on each side of the motor..(there are bolts on the Penta drives you can extend)..thats what my intentions are...then just remove them when the boat is in water. It would support the unit up, and keep it from bouncing.

Re: M-Y Wedge transom saver - good?

Yamaha now makes a wedge for its outboard motors. It looks identical to the M-Y Wedge except it has Yamaha printed on it. The dealer I was at was selling the Yamaha wedge for $60. The explanation they gave me to purchase the wedge is to prevent the motor from crashing down on to the tilt cylinder rods (and therefore bending them) if the motor lock broke (which they say will occur in due time).
The M-Y Wedge appears to be a bargain and is a feasible solution to using a transom saver that connects to the trailer. I agree that the wedge doesn't prevent the motor from coming up when traveling but this can be easily remedied by using a bungee cord.

Re: M-Y Wedge transom saver - good?

Old thread, timeless topic.

Has anyone, any time, any where, seen or even heard of a "trailer bracket" failing? Until we have 2 incidents, not from operator error, I'm sticking with that.

I don't use any devices, but if I did, it would be a wedge or home-made variation.

I believe it is better to "transfer" any pressure to the transom than to the trailer cross bar. And if your transom can't handle it, you need a new transom.

A trailer and the boat on it do not move in unison on bumps and jars, but the motor and transom do, to some degree. By connecting your Lower Unit to the trailer, you are adding a whole 'nother dimension of twisting and jarring. This is the best argument against "transom savers."

I have a transom saver on my boat. It came that way. I use it though, because I have to trailer the outboard with it tilted up. Otherwise the motor will drag on the ground. It's just extra insurance incase the tilt pump fails.

Re: M-Y Wedge transom saver - good?

"Transom saver" is one of the most misunderstood terms around the water. The only way to 'save' a transom from motor torque is to solidly attach the lower unit to the frame of the trailer. I looked for something that would do such since I have to tilt the engine for safe road clearance, and there's nothing on the market that will reach the first cross member of my trailer. So I used nothing except trim/tilt ... until I blew out a trim cylinder.

The first thing anyone needs to do is determine what it is they want, then determine what (if anything) will best satisfy that need.

I now use a single ram M-Y on a 225 Honda (also used it on a 140 Suzuki before that). The unit I have works in conjunction with trim/tilt, if you don't have that then look elsewhere. It's installed over a tilt ram and slightly compressed by the trim. Trim/tilt cylinder blowouts usually occur from compression shocks, and the Wedge primarily minimizes that force; 'bounce' is dampened by the tilt cylinder, and not usually a cause for blowouts.

Motor manufacturers don't care beyond not recommending use of the tilt lock when on the road. I don't work for M-Y and don't know anyone who does. I don't believe in snake oil, but I do believe in what works for me, and the M-Y does for me what it was designed to do - minimize hydraulic shock in the trim/tilt system. A piece of 2x4 would work, too, but that just looks so 'redneck' going down the highway ...

The transom is the strongest part of the boat.
Driving without some sort of stress relief on the rams causes problems with some til and trim units, they get vapor lock or something.
So if the outboard doesn't have a GOOD trailering support it needs it.

The trailering supports on my johnson 150 are heavy duty, nothing else needed as long as the T/T is retracted slightly to place the weight on the supports. Thats important I think, theres a service bulletin warning about not doing so and causing internal problems in the tilt system.

But fear is always a great mkting tool and prudence spends like a drunken sailer. Nothing beats peace of mind.
