I am reviving a Tohatsu 3.5 two cycle (S/N: 309-26049) with a very feeble spark.
I know it is older, but I don't know if it is old enough to have points and condensor.
Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,

The 3.5A used points, NLA from Tohatsu; You could try to match something up at NAPA... might get lucky. The 3.5A2 was electronic ignition.

Thank you.
I popped the flywheel off this afternoon and found some very badly pitted ignition points.
It is surprising that Toahatsu NLA'd them. I know it is not a big-ticket item, but there must be gazillions of these motors in the field, and points are a regular maintenance item.
I'm hopeful about finding some aftermarket points, but I would even pop for an electronic conversion if one were available at reasonable cost.

The supplier that Tohatsu contracted with to make the points stopped producing them...It's a tragedy, but then again the thing is 20 years old so.....

File or emory cloth the contact surfaces clean, silver solder build up to original new height, file flat, grease lube riser cam.............you will be good for another 5-10 years of use.

Done this with several NLA points and starter solenoid contacts..............Don

Re: M3.5A ignition

Thank you for the help so far.
I found a set of points at NAPA, using the eyeball matchup method (P/N: CS2380).
They are not an exact match, but not far off.
The point cam is attached to the flywheel, and the points live under the flywheel, so setting the point gap is a challenge.
I found piston TDC using a dial indicator, and put aprotractor on the crankshaft.
In the absense of a manual or timing information, I set the points to break at 10deg. BTDC. If anyone has the timing spec for this, I would be grateful.
I have not test-fired the engine yet, but I have a crisp spark with thes spark tester set for 0.25".
My main issue now will be timing.

Single Cylinder Engines models 2.5 / 3.5 / 5.0

The timing of these engines is inspected by locating the timing marks
which are on top of the flywheel. You can not adjust the timing, it's fixed.
