i noticed the shift lever was disconnected where the rod goes into the lower unit. looks like the pin is gone. tried to take the lower unit off but seems like it is hung up on the drive shaft. is there anything special about taking it off. also if the pin fell off and into the hole where the rod is going to the lower unit will this hurt anything or do i NEED to get it out. thank you

If lower unit has not been disarmed in a long time, you have a drive shaft solded into lower crankshaft, no special tool required, just patience, try to hammer down lower tail edge with wooden stud and hammer. Apply grease on shaft upper splines when reassembling. If pin has dropped down through lower leg, might exit through exhaust prop ?

We have the stainless roll pins on the shelf all the time, as they do get dropped occasionally. If the brass coupler has worn from many insertions of the pin, you may need a new one. As for the LU coming down, sounds like the driveshaft is stuck in the crank. You will want wedges and patience to pull it down. Lube the splines (only) (NOT the end of the driveshaft) when you reassemble.

Don't know Tohatsu 70 HP model as we only work up to 40C models, if the lower unit has a large U hole from where cam rod exits, there is the possibility that while removing the pin inavertently has gone down through. If it's the case, nothing mechanically will happen as cam rod, water pump case are sealed; on upper lower unit will find a labyrinth water path that drives circulating water down to the exhaust tunnel and exits through prop.

Are you trying to pull leg down to check for the missing pin or it's part of the service to check entire water pump condition, that 70 shaft must engage at least 4 cm inside lower crankshaft, so will still need to pull it down a bit. Add a couple of beers to wedges & time too. Once leg is removed, check missing pin, probably still inside water labyrinth.

+1 on the add beer, i added beer and wedges and tapped slowly........ then it dropped, there was no pin???? also the water pump was in great condition. now i was messing around with the shift rod and seems tough to get it into reverse and drive, once its in drive or reverse the shaft spins the propeller fine. is it suppose to be a little tough or just drop right into gear. seems like itll be a tad bit harder with the control cable to put it in gear

9514033516M, SPRING PIN, $0.63. They come in 10-packs. You should not use a non-stainless roll pin, or it will probably never come apart again (due to corrosion), making future servicing of the wp more time consuming and costly.

You may shift ONLY when the driveshaft or propshaft is turning, or it may not go into gear at all. It is a mechanical clutch dog assembly, as detailed in the service manual.

Nice to hear that cold beers helped. Squirt some W 40 or carb clean into shift rod's sliding mechanisms, leat soak, move lever back and forth several times to lose sticky areas, lube with automatic transmision oil, engine must be on to engage forward or reverse; Disconnect lanyard just in case, while keeping turning flywheel by hand you can also engage gear. With control cables well adjusted and lubed engage system will work smooth as a breeze...

If you want to drop your lower leg as fast as a formula 1 once on pits, order part 9516030800 (R Pin) comes in 10 units/pack, much faster to put on and remove from shift rod than original pin. Always carry a spare, just in case.
