Mac 3 ? spark plug?

I'v been given a mac 3 outboard and Im in the process of rebuilding it. It came without a spark plug and for now all I would like to know is what type I need. Type is TA636/FAA12

mac 3 outboard is indeed a johnson from the 1940,s as far as i can tell,will see if i can find out more.

can you post a pic?how old does this motor look?are those the only numbers or is there more?if you go by the old johnson numbers it says it a 1933 21.1 hp ,does it look that old?mind you the only numbers that come up are 636.its quite possible somebody else had a motor called mac 3 also i guess.

Ill take a pic tomorrow, and post, age I would say 60s ish The powerhead looks or is a Techumseh as Iv searched through the pages and found a pic of a carb the same as mine. The points are ducatti and it looks the same as a sea king 3.5 without the hood.

ok thats a start ,proably rules out the 1930,40 johnson by the same name. there was a motor called the mighty mite 3 .1 1/2 hp to 2 hp i think.mind you a pic or 2 would be great.

It looks like the Italian version of the common Tecumseh/Eska air-cooled motors. We have one in our collection - I believe the full name is a Mac-Aspara (sp?). I haven't had it off the rack in years, but it looks much like yours, only ours has a black & white decal and a white tank. If it takes a 3/8-inch reach plug, I would go with a Champion J6C...

Yep, that is a typical Tecumseh powerhead. Those numbers should be the Techumseh powerhead numbers. Techumseh sold powerheads to a multitude of wanna-be motor companies, mostly Eska, who then sold them to Sears, Wards, Penneys, and a dozen or so more.

I still don't know who in blazes Mac-3 is, and that bottom end resembles an Eska, but isn't.

See your lawn mower shop for Techumseh parts.

Do you think it came from Italy? There once was a Mac-10 motor from Italy. It used a Wankle Rotary Combustion engine. It wasn't any good either.

Thanks for the feedback, Im going to try the champion J6C and spend a weekend ginging it a workover, and hopefully a cheep outboad for the tender.

Hi Frank,
Being that ELNA is from England, it's not a huge leap to think it is one of the Italian motors. I'm not sure if Mac-Aspera made their own motor, copying the Clinton style, or if they bought the Clinton motors wholesale and copied the lower units. As you noted, they're similar, but not the same...
I've seen one of the Mac-10s run. Noisy as all get-out and didn't seem to have the same kick as a standard 2-stroke...

IV put it all back together and set the points and ignition at what I think should be about right.
Points 0.8
Ignition about 1 cm before tdc

The carb cleaned but left as was.

Engine starts very easy with choke and will run on half choke but then miss fires once through exhaust and struggles to carry on running.

Can anyone help with timings for this type of engine, and what compression should it achieve.
