I've been reading the posts on rebuilding rotten transoms and stringers and decks ever since I got the bad news from my mechanic. My "new" '87 Mach 1 has a rotten transom; so much flex that the outdrive pulls away and lets in LOTS of water. So I've debated whether I should just cut my losses, part it out and scrap the rest, or undertake the repair(s) myself. If I scrap it, I won't have a boat for several years at least. If I bite the bullet and fix it, I hope to be able to use it this fall or next year for sure.
I only had it out once and the boat ran great (despite having a dreaded 470/165) but it leaks so bad now that I can't use it. I can't find a soft spot anywhere on the deck and I've checked every square inch. But I'm thinking that if the transom is that rotten, what are the odds that the rest of the underdeck structure is not? No way to tell without pulling it up, I guess. Thanks to Friscoboater's videos on YouTube, I'm beginning to think I might actually be able to pull this off after all.
Can anyone give me an estimate of how much (and what types of) material I'll need to buy and a ballpark estimate on material costs? I just intend to rebuild the transom right now, but I'll go ahead and do the rest depending on what I find once I get under there. I'm guessing it will take me about 40 hours to do the transom (evenings and weekends), and probably double that for the stringers etc if necessary. I know I can count on you guys to assist when (not if) I get in over my head so I'm actually kinda looking forward to it...sorta. I think. I'll post some pics when I get started.
