machine head or not?

On this 1957 35hp Johnson I am fixing to put on my boat when stripping it down to paint the block I noticed a head bolt that was not seated all the way. Turns out it was stripped out and the po just put the bolt in not tightened down at all. I did not like that so pulled the head and put a helicoil in. However, when inspecting the head I found an imperfection in one of the cylinder walls. It looks like a gouge, but it does not go all the way through to the cylinder. I am attempting to attach a pic of it. Should I just reinstall as is (it had excellent compression before taking the head off) or have a machine shop machine the imperfection out? How much can they machine off safely? Here is a link to a pic of the head.

Your post is confusing. The title and the photo deal with the head but your description deals with the cylinder walls.

my bad description. I mean to say the imperfection is in the head in a spot that covers the cylinder not the water jackets.

I think that's what he meant. But I think I'd be more concerned with all the pock-marks at about the 7 o:clock position in the picture. They are right under the sealing ring. How deep are they? At the least, he should do the figure-8 trick on a piece of sandpaper.

that is the spot. The pock marks are just sealer somone got on the head when they put it on. My guess is they went heavy on the sealer knowing they had a bolt stripped out. I could not run one peacefully knowing a head bolt was missing. I would worry constantly. I will clean it up with the figure 8 method and put it back on. Thanks, Fred

Re: machine head or not? update

I used the figure 8 method to hone the head and just got around to checking compression tonight on it. 125 lbs in both cylinders.
