Re: Magic Disappearing 454 Balancer

I'll try it, Dubs. cr2k, I did put the coil wire back on, although at one point last night, I did realize I'd left the TB IV module unplugged.

ChrisCraft - Ya gotta start a new thread, otherwise it's thread-jacking, (considered poor form), and doesn't get your question as many answers.

Hey, Dubs - I just tried it with the dizzy in several different positions, still no luck. First, I took all the wires off the cap, and started over with #1, hooked'em all back up in the right firing order, tracing each one from it's plug to the cap. It fires, but it still won't start.

if you are close, the engine should run, have you checked to make sure you have good, strong spark at the coil??

i guess it is possible the distibutor is 180 degrees off, i know you have said that you are positive that it was on the compression stroke but i have seen it lots of times where people swear they have it right on compression stroke and its on exhaust

Take your spark plog and put it in the wire. Have someone crank it over and check for spark. If you have spark Bump it back over till it blows your finger off the plug hole recheck for TDC. Recheck rotor position. Should be at #1 If you have spark and fuel with compression it will fire up

Yo, Dubs - "if you are close, the engine should run, have you checked to make sure you have good, strong spark at the coil??"

I feel safe in assuming that I have strong spark at the coil for two reasons; 1) it fires when I try to start it. 2) if the key is in the run position, the coil will promptly arc to my hand if I get too close, with a lovely blue spark. I really don't know how to screw this up. As rodbolt says, it's pretty simple. I have found a way to do it, though, and it's ideas about how it can be screwed up that I'm after. I appreciate ALL the responses, gentlemen.

Re: Magic Disappearing 454 Balancer

GOT IT! I had the feeling that when I figured this out, I was not going to feel a clever lad at all, at all. Dubs, you had it. I tried firing it up with the dizzy in serveral positions, but I did'nt advance it far enough to suit the beast. I was putting the dist back in there in the same position it came out, and the engine did'nt like it. It finally occurred to me that I was putting it in with no advance, so I cranked it around counter clock wise further, and BAM! Now, on to the fuel gauge, hatch cover actuator, bilge blower.....
Again, Thanks to everybody who responded, and I do mean everybody.
