You are better off going to see a witchdoctor. I can't believe people fall for this stuff.

Re: magnetic bracelets

Wel. I'll give my 2 cents. Take it for what it is worth. Last week, my parents were visiting me - and I commented on my dad's cool bracelet. He then told me it was magnetic, and it's purpose. He also was wearing a matching necklace...

He said my brother (who recently had hip surgery) has been wearing one, and was feeling much better..... but my sister in law was a non believer. She wore one for a month, and felt no different. After taking it off, she apparently got a sore back - and that went away after she put on the bracelet again.... so mom and dad have their laughs about the irony there..

I went to wikipedia and read about how they work.... yeah, I'm skeptical - I've tried to wear mine for the last week, and it's hard. I work with point of sale equipment. My bracelet kept sticking to the cash drawers, and picking up screws. I have to take it off to play my guitar.... I forgot it at home again today.

they say these bracelets have a placebo effect... If you believe in them - then good for you, and they help... I think the copper bracelets were a better concept, you could see the copper ring on your skin, and knew it was absorbing the copper into your body...

Re: magnetic bracelets

If you're the type that can be hypnotized, then maybe they will work. Otherwise it's snake oil.

Re: magnetic bracelets

Do your reading and research, as you are doing now. I know numerous people whom I regard as intelligent, well educated persons who firmly believe they are beneficial to joint pain.

Others (referring to point of view only, NOT intelligence)....'Bruce'...clearly view them as having no merit.

There is a lot of information on these. The "theory" dates back thousands of years.

Myself....I think it comes down to faith. If you think it works...then it works, and I'm not saying that lightly.

People spend $50 on worse things.

Re: magnetic bracelets

I suffer from Fibromyalgia due to other health issues, and there are many REAL, beneficial things you can do for joint pain. I put a teaspoon of ground flaxseed in my morning oatmeal, and it helps.

Like I said, magnetic bracelets work on people who believe in the Easter Bunny, and Santa Claus.

I for one think Bruce speaks with intelligence, and not just on this matter.

Re: magnetic bracelets

The placebo effect is very powerful, and very real. Many drugs do not make it to market because they do not produce results materially better than a placebo. This isn't necessarily because that the drugs are not effective; it's that the placebo IS particularly effective for that particular ailment.

Exactly why I stated earlier that the same people who "fall for" hypnotism, fall for the placebo effect. Not all people are built like that. ;)

You do have this backwards. Drugs don't make it to market because they are proven no better than a placebo. In other words, they do not perform better than a sugar pill and cannot be considered effective.

Same for magic bracelets, homeopathy and many other, multi-million dollar businesses. Yeah, I'm a skeptic about a lot of things.

Good source for information on these issues is http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/

I'm not sure on the hypnotism thing. There was an interesting Mythbusters episode where hypnotism made a material difference in what the three folk were able to remember about an event.

Much like the mice vs. elephant show they did, I was surprised by the results.

Re: magnetic bracelets

I believe that any benefit from things like magnetic bracelets. . .and many other "therapies" that have no scientific (biochemical) explanation is entirely psychological.

That doesn't mean they are not effective or not real. It means that the benefits are in the patient, not the treatment.

If your in your early forties, and hurt that bad, I would first look at diet and excercise, and maybe see about a blood work up to see if you have early stage arthritis or whatever makes your joints hurt.

Re: magnetic bracelets

One of my coworkers tried the mag-bracelet thing and said it didn't do a dang thing.

Then he said the only thing that works for him is to fill a shot glass half full of golden raisins, then fill it up with vodka and let it cure over night on his bed stand. In the morning first thing, swig down the mix and chew the raisins. Says his joints don't hurt anymore.....go figure.....
