1990 2.0 seadrives. no spark took flywheel off to clean corrosion from stator noticed sealant was coming loose from magnets. magnets that had sealant loose moved. so I put them back. No problem or so I thought put it back together. Got spark. But it seamed the flywheel was nnnot seated all the way. Nut flush with crankshaft. Other engine has a least a thread protruding. hmmmm so disassemlied again this time magnets got stuck to stator. Can these magnets be successfully glued back in. I'M worried about tearing the crank keyway up if something gernades up there.

Re: magnets and flywheels

use the red search button at the top of the page and type" flywheel magnets" youll see lots of stuff.

i have a 1991 225v6 that needs the magnets reglued.

my dealer said they would repair it for 1 hour of labor.

you can remove the magnets , clean the flywheel surface and magnet surface REALLY good with acetone and then EPOXY them back, with good even placement. its more important to have even spacing/placement than it is to worry about where to place the first one.

Re: magnets and flywheels

Most of the time the magnets come loose due to rust buildup that 'pushes' them away from the flywheel. It is fairly common in salt water areas where salt spray gets under the motor cover and slung around by the flywheel.

Your best bet is to have the inside of the flywheel bead-blasted first to get rid of any spec of rust on the mounting surfaces. Otherwise they will pop free again. Use the epoxy available from Johnson-Evinrude, then paint the magnets and flywheel to help seal them.

Re: magnets and flywheels

Well went out and bought a sand blaster cleaned it all up I used JB weld. Hope that doesnt come back to haught me. Was surprised to see the magnets slide toward eash other. But a gentle slide back and a few bolts did the trick. Plan on painting in the morning. I'm still concerned about the taper seating. Like I said earlier nut was flush with the crank the other engine has at least one thread showing. Cleaned both tapers and removed any solvents and oil. Sure hope it seats like the other one.

Don't forget that those flywheel nuts need 145 ft. lbs. of torque.

Everything worked out great. Used JB weld and yes the torque was listed in my manual. Thanks for the leg up all.
