Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Here's my math...

Trailer = $500

Kicker = $500

Main = $1000

So I'm thinking anything $2K or less would be purdy good eh.

I agree though, they look rough though. Could be an indication of how he cared for his gear. Could be a bargaining chip too!

pretty much spot on by my thinking, I am hoping to beat em up pretty good, never know some people offend easily and others are realistic with the start high but take what they can get. I have found actually having cash in your pocket makes a difference, specially if they have had a ton of tire kickers! I just got to Louisville Ky. and am going to be doing my once a quarter whirlwind tour, Kentucky and Tennessee, long week and I will go chase that deal down Saturday!(if its there)

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Well look here, 150 miles and all of a sudden these fell onto the back of my work truck!
100_1592.jpg

100_1587.jpg

100_1591.jpg

Along with a set of trim tabs and pump, aftermarket oil pump for the kicker, a battery charger, life jackets, anchor, 4 manual riviara down riggers and weights and some other treasures.
The 150 hp has even compression (90lbs) across al cylinders, bright spark, and my video scope shows clean scuff free cylinder walls. Fired up and idled on muffs and shifted in and out of gear. Tilt and trim pump works but leaks.
15hp is a mess but has even compression building to 125lbs, bright spark. Unfortunately the choke lever is gone(crappy set up my 79 has the same set up and it sucks) the starter switch is mia and the kill switgh on the end of the tiller handle is gone and broken. throttle linkage is fd up too, gonna take some work to get right.
All in all I am hesitantly happy with the deal, trim tabs if operable will be a sweet deal, the OMC kicker bracket should bring some cash, trailer with a little work should bring some cash. Monday I am gonna go to my local gravel pit and see if I can get a test ride out of it, the fuel in the tank smells horrible but she idled on it so we will see!!!
I think this will push this project along nicely, time frame and mph!!!!!!!!!!
Oh ya might not be a Jastastic price but I got in under Two grand$$$$$ Not bad i think.:D
Clean stainless prop on the 150 also

Wow, what an undertaking. You have doe such a thorough job on this project. You will certainl have lots of flotation from your mount. Is it set up for a 25 inch shaft? Seems your is deeper than most until you get up on plane it will probable spray pretty good but once up it should ride out nice.. Your shop is incredible. I am looking to build a 40x 60 on my place in the not too distant future. I look forward to seeing your sea trial pics. I am tuned in here again so I will stay on this thread.

MD - looks like you got the Power. Glad the 150 runs better than she looks. I think you got a good deal, especially with all the extra goodies. Sounds like the outboard version of Jason's Thumper. Good luck on the test.

Preped today for test run. hopefully ok. Guessing it will need carb work.

We will see if it reaches thumper status

25" shaft, and I am worried about the spray also, smooth bottom to the end with nothing below the hull should help.
Its a gamble for sure!

Today was about ol Dauntless,

100_1610.jpg

Wow, shes got some rot, neat boat, walk around set up, not my cup of tea, cuddy that only a 100lb 4' tall person could appreciate. With a 150 hp I appreciate:D Prepped it to take it out and see how the main runs
Pulled a pile of loot off and out of her

Loot or junk? Time will tell.

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

Behind the kicker bracket was this treat
100_1599.jpg

Along with a rotted transom,no caulk, two holes with no wood core left. Put some bolts in and slobbered some 5200 on
100_1611.jpg

One ride is all that transom will get from me, stood on the 150 and jumped up and down, transom is suprisingly stiff.
this isn't helping her out though
100_1633.jpg

She has two live well/ bait wells, self filling and draining via thru hulls, one side was leaking and swelled enough to pull the drain into the hull, direct leak for sure, pounded the drain out. other side PO had put a plastic thru hull in that the threads only stuck through maybe a threads worth, no caulk, leaker. So my solution. 1" diameter bolts 3" long with washers and 5200 pounded in and tightened down
100_1613.jpg

100_1612.jpg

Beautiful isn't it!!!! Shouldn't leak!!!!!!

Heres some goodies in the aft compartments
Battery, with tender, VRO pump and a nice looking batt switch
100_1619.jpg

100_1620.jpg

Other side, Bennett trip pump that maybe salvageable (been under water at some point from a plugged drain I think)
100_1618.jpg

Also a omc oiler for the kicker, had a Sunny delight cap on it, omc cap was 8" away behind the trim pump
100_1616.jpg

Filter housing
100_1621.jpg

Couple of trim tabs, maybe salvageable
100_1614.jpg

Pile of junk or not?????
Gotta decide to VRO or not, Is there a replacement fuel pump??? I really would like to get rid of it all,
Gonna have to jump into the Jounnyrude forum and get educated!!!!!!

While digging around in this mess,
100_1626.jpg

100_1622.jpg

I found this disconnected from ground(neutral whatever you prefer)
100_1624.jpg

VRO alarm I presume, hooked it up and it beeps once when the key is turned on, hate to see it was disconnected, wonder why?? Rats nest of wiring, maybe just stupidity??
Gonna figure out the VRO warning before running it Monday for its test run, might mix a dose of oil in the tank for a little peace of mind. Anyways gonna head over to the rude forum for a bit!!!
See ya

That is a nice looking WA. Maybe I should say used to be. It does have nice lines. Good thing you made her water tight.

Mix some 50:1 just in case the VRO isn't. I think that's the safe thing to do.

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

I think you made a great buy. The 140 hp 'Rude I had was quite possibly the best motor I've ever owned. She's still tearing up the Gulf around these parts and she's now on her 3rd owner since me (6 total, that I know of). I also had the little brother to that 15, a 9.9 on a sailboat and it started on the first pull every time. I'm thinking you'll end up with the same type luck (I'm an optimist).

It just goes to show you that you are far better off buying a complete boat instead of individual parts. Just the stuff you'll use would've been a lot more than $2k if bought individually, even in the exact same condition. Looking forward to seeing this one finish!

I was at Camp and Cruise this morning and noticed they had a mid to late '80's Evinrude 175 there, but looks like your all set now. Didn't get a price, but it prolly was a couple arms and legs....

Re: Magnumdekes 1976 22' Starcraft Islander

We will see how it goes guys, I hope it was for the best! I will feel better once I run it, thats for sure. All the rest of the deal is a bonus, I really figure the motor with good compression #'s is worth what I paid. Higher horsepower motors aren't going for 1000$ regularly, I see em at 2000$ and up which makes what I paid look good to me. All comes down to it performing, may have to do carb work but that is to be expected. We will see!!!!!
