Re: Maiden Voyage on new Glastron Skiflight w/ Evinrude 40

Hello,
I just disassembled my water pump housing, and took out and replaced my impeller. I found standing water in/around the impeller. I could also smell the foul odor of gearcase oil, so I removed the plate that the impeller sits on, and remved the driveshaft. Then I dumped the water/oil mixture remaining in the l/u. My question; Is the main concern with water in the gearcase with corrosion? I mean, should I worry about other possible damage if water is in my gearcase instead of oil? I am asking because I plan on re-filling my gearcase with oil and taking it out this weekend, even though I know it still leaks. My assumption is that the oil will get mixed with some water, but there will still be enough to lubricate gears ect.

thanks for all the great replies.

The hypoid gear oil will emulsify water that gets in to a certain extent, and will continue to lubricate. Try running the motor a for a while and then drain the L/U. If milky oil comes out, the hypoid is doing its' job. If water runs out first, before the oil drains, then there is too much water intrusion and the leak needs to be found and repaired.

"the surging (reving up and down) is a sure sign of fuel starvation (lean running) which will eventually kill and engine." -Silvertip

Question for Silvertip; why will the lean fuel mixture kill my engine? Is it a lubrication issue? It's just that I can't see why stalling an engine for a couple of secconds could do major damage to it? Thanks, I'm really just curious as to the reason behind that sentance.

Also, just looking at what they had at Wally world, Hi Vis gear lubricant is sold as Super T... 80-90 or part snythetic 75-90 or fully sny 75-140. What is the best option, considering that the fully sny is three times the price of the 80-90 conventional.

I'd use the cheap stuff while you're playing around with it trying to determine if you have a leak. No sense buying the high-priced stuff when you're draining it to check for water intrusion. Once you are sure there are no leaks, then you could go to the more expensive oil if you want.

ok,

I have found a cheap oil for both the 80-90w and 80-140w which is more appropiate for a outboard?

Also, I have checked the fuel lines and they seem to be clear and working, but I am still getting a loss of rpm's when I hit WOT for longer than 30 seconds or so. A friend of mine said that it sounded just like a governer/limiter on a car. The cut out usually happens when I'm going 20 or 21 mph (the boat's max) and the cut out is generally for the same length each time it cuts out. Could this be a limiter? Did OMC put thoes on outboards from 1969?

And on a personal note for everyone with an old boat:

Where the hell are you guys!!! Seriously I went out every day for the past three days and I diddn't see a single boat that looked older than mine. Its not that mine is an eyesore on the water or anything like that, it is just hard not to have "boat envy" when all I see is bigger, newer, more powerfull boats than a runabout from the 60's.

80-90wt is fine - just make sure it is the hypoid type for outboard lower units so that it emulsifies the water.

We're out there - just not in the majority. I run a 1957 Lark on my pontoon and a 1961 Merc 400 on my 1961 Starcraft runabout. Both motors are the oldest ones on my lake! And I'm proud of the fact. I've towed more than my share of newer boats/motors which had stalled on the lake with my pontoon (with '57 Lark). I've never gotten stranded with that old '57 and wouldn't trade it for a newer model with all the fancy electronics.:)

I'll chime in since I also own a 15ft glastron skiflite which at one time had a 1966 evinrude with electric shift. Mine also takes on about a quart or so of water when I'm using it. Not sure where it comes from but it stays dry when it just sits at the dock. Mine ran a little over 25mph when the evinrude was newer and easily pulled a medium size adult skiing. I've since upgraded to a new 40hp 2 cycle Yamaha and top speed is 34 mph and pulls any size skier easliy. The floor is getting spongy between the seats so that will need attention before next season. This is a great small lake ski boat. Good luck with the evinrude.
