main shaft going down to the lower unit? to much play?

the main drive shaft on my (115hp johnson 1985) going into lower unit. has about 3/4 of a inch play between forward and reverse. when i turn it. is that to much play i figured this out by marking the top of the shaft and looking at it as i turned the shaft .
