Re: Major handling issues

think of it like the rudder on an airplane.. if u turn it so as its rear end moves to the right it will cause the boat to turn to the right for example..

if your prop (looked at from the rear of the boat)turns clockwise.. the torque reaction will try and turn the boat hull in the opposite direction i.e. anti-clockwise or lean to the left which in theory causes the boat to pull/turn to the left.. so your trim fin/tab would need to have its rear end moved to the right to counter-act this tendancy..

thats the theory.. he he..

trog

It is the other way round.

Turn the trailing edge of the tab TOWARDS the pull.

Re: Major handling issues

I am glad that you are addressing the core problem, the skeg and the motor location. Using Smart Tabs to correct problems like this is something we never recommend. They will improve just about any boat dramatically and can correct some issue, but motor alignment and a bent skeg should be fixed first.

Sounds like a badly bent skeg was a culprit along with a mis-mounted engine. Those little trim tabs on outboards don't have much effect once you get the boat to planing speed. There mostly for engine torque compensation at low speed.

Re: Major handling issues

if i am wrong it dont work like an airplanes rudder does then.. turning the trailing edge of an airplane rudder to the right (looked at from behind) would make the airplane nose turn/yaw to the right by pushing the rear end over to the left.. same with a boat rudder..

i am also assuming that a prop that turns to the right or clockwise when viewed from the rear would make the boat hull lean to the left and try and turn the boat to the left.. i could be wrong with this one perhaps.. praps i am just wrong trying to apply what i know about airplane theory to boats..

mind u i have been known to connect the controls the wrong way round on some of the toy RC airplanes i have built and played with.. it does make for an interesting maiden flight.. he he he..

anyways clue me in as to where my thinking has gone wrong.. cos i must admitt to not having fiddled with that many trim /fins/tabs on boats.. mine tracks okay and i aint had to play with it..

trog

To quote Stillfishing in another thread on the same subject:

If your boat tends to swing right, you need to turn the trim fin trailing edge RIGHT - not left.

The reason is that this fin acts as a rudder for the motor itself, and setting it RIGHT will cause the motor to try and swing its prop to port - left. this helps your boat bias to the left also.
Stevens.. ahh the penny drops.. the little fin tries to turn the motor not the boat.. he he..

cant help but feel that if the motor dosnt have a ton of slop in the steering thereby permitting the motor to turn relative to the boat its the boat thats gonna turn thow.. the wrong way.. he he..

still i now know the correct theory.. the fin works on the motor not the boat.. thanks..

trog
