The play is normal for cable steer, but if you have power steering it should be easy. Do you have power steering?

and as always what motor?

For the most part yes. The helm is a gear and the cable is a very long spiral gear. So 1/8 of an inch of play with the gears will give you an inch or more at the wheel. There is also usually another 1/8 inch of play at the steering ram. When your running on plane you should not notice much of the play, but do notice it more at slow speeds.

Do you have more then what I've explained?

No that's about right , at high speeds I don't notice it only at low speeds.. But my old boat didn't have this much play.. anything I can tighten?

No, can not tighten anything to lessen it

Can change over to full hydraulic steering and get rid of all if you have the money to do so

I wanna chime in here..... I took my boat to the marina to try some new props, once I changed to a 4 blade prop, almost all of my steering play(or drifting) disappeared at low speed. Now..... I'm not saying that's the solution, but in researching props, I found some posts that stated I would have better low speed handling, and that appeared to be true.

I too had a little slop in the wheel though, and still do, but man..... did that prop swap make a world of difference!

again..... being sniped

Not really I would honestly like to see that. I have found no one ever say they can take a V hull boat with a single prop and drive straight with any kind of prop, until today. I have twin 4 blade props on my B3 and I wonder.

We are here but the difference between 2 an d 3 inches is mostly the same. If you want zero ply in the steering, you need to go full hydraulic

Hi guys I have a 2003
Bayliner 205 5.0 Engine with Alpha 1 gen 2
The wheel has about 3 inches of play before the rear drive starts to move ..

And when docking or slow speeds Very hard to handle .. I hope it's not something serious like that nut in the transom .. maybe bad cable ? But how can I verify ?

grab the drive and move it from side to side while someone watches the back of the boat. drive moves and steering arm does not= worn steering arm and/or pin

Ayuh,.... This has been beatin' to death, it's the Boat Operator, not the looseness of yer steerin',....

If there is slope in the steering, then you can check to see if bolts connections and fitting are worn or if they fit snugly. Ever segment of the steering wears. And if there is any slope anywhere, the steering wheel will have play. Because even a small amount of one connection/bolt slope is amplified (sort of speak) from the diameter of the steering wheel. So have someone turn the steering wheel while you look at every possible fitting to see if any slope exist in the fitting. If so, fix it. Could even be loose bolts. JMHO

So move the Rear unit ? I tried sometimes it moves and moves the steering with it.. sometimes it locks up ?
