Major Problem Need Help water pump

I think my out board is a johnson 6 hp here are the numbers Belgium model J6rlenm

Here is the problem i took my boat out to the lake last week on my way back across the lake the engine didnt want to stay running and i started smelling rubber burning so i cut it off and floated a bit i got it back on trailer and me and my friend then noticed after checking it out that it was not spaying water,

The rubber i was smelling was the cable that the shifter hooks to had melted along with the hose that shoots water my question is i think its the water pump i just have no idea how to find it or change it im includeing so pictures and any help would be great

Also can anyone tell me from the numbers what year and type of outboard i have is

The number looks like a 1992 model.

Go to the BRP Parts catalog site and look up your motor. Then, navigate to the gearcase diagram so that you can see the water pump. It is centered on the driveshaft where it gets its power. "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e"

Look on the port side transom bracket for a 1" X 3" plate with two sets of numbers on it.

Also look on the engine block for a aluminum welch plug, it is convex and about 3/4 " in diameter check the numbers there as well.

There is a little freeze plug looking thing it has B8926735 in smaller numbers it has J6RLENM only other numbers i see

Besides a waterpump, you may want to consider a head, and exhaust cover gasket. That engine looks like it may have got a mite warm.

It did get warm but its still cranking and seems to be running fine i called a boat repair shop and they told me to replace the water pump it would be around 200.00 should i try to do it myself or let them do it .

Ive never worked on a boat moter but have re built lawn mowers and worked on cars so im not a total nut

Looking at the diagram is the pump behind the propeller ?

Also that pic above the 1st one the plate where the tube melted off i belive is the exhaust is that where the water comes out

The pump is where the lower unit gearcase separates from the midsection.

I don't mean to ruin your day, but if the pistons aren't scored in that motor, you are either very lucky or all prayed up.

At the very least, in addition to a water pump repair, you simply MUST replace the head gasket and exhaust gaskets. Probably the powerhead gasket also. If you don't, there is real danger that they will leak and squirt water into the cylinders & crankcase, causing additional serious damage. Your repair guy didn't tell you that, did he?

nope i just called and said i think i need a water pump and he said around 200 to repair it.

So is it worth repairing or should i just get a trolling mot

The water exiting from the hole in the exhaust cover is part of the water that has pumped through the engine, the rest goes out with the exhaust.

The spent water is part of the cooling of the exhaust sytem so without water, cover got hot enough to melt the hose, so you will probably want to replace the exhaust cover gasket as well as the water pump.

If you buy a factory service manual you can do repairs, such as changing the water pump, head gasket, and exhaust gasket.

I strongly suggest you also look at the grommet(s) at the top of the water tube.

It all looks a little bit different to earlier (Pre 1991) models but with those corrosion of the aluminum squeezes the grommet over the top of the tube and cuts off the water flow. Unless your water pump impeller is completely gone it sounds as though that could have happened to you. (Part ~ 57 in the midsection drawing.)

When you have the lower unit off connect a hose to the water tube to see if you can get a water flow. If not that may be the cause, the water channels in the head may be blocked as well but if you are taking the head off to do the gasket you'll see those.

ALSO your engine is a long shaft one (that's what the L in the model number means) so when you separate the lower unit from the leg break the joint at the TOP of the extension, clean any corrosion off the drive shaft then the bush in the extension will slide up the drive shaft as you then remove the extension. If you break the joint below the extension first you'll tend to pull the drive shaft out of the water pump and the impeller key will smash the pump housing. (been there got the Tee shirt)

I had to run mine for several hours with a very restricted water flow but it did not get quite as hot as yours and I had no problems once the water flow was sorted out. If yours starts and runs Ok I'd assume that no really serious damage has been done.

It's a good time to do the drive shaft seals on top of the gearcase too.

good luck its all easy enough to sort out, but taking the power head off to get at that grommet is a pain. Rock it backwards and forwards to break the joint.
