Re: Major steering problem!!

Took out the cables all the way, it wasnt hard at all, i just had to watch out for zip ties connected to the cables and others. I seen on some web site that you needed to watch out for a lot of grease when you took those four bolts off under the helm. I pulled my rectangluar shanped cable end and noticed some rust in it. So that might have the problem, i might as well change the cables since they are the orignals and I have them out of the boat. "Just FYI"

I'll post the work on the replacement cables late next week, when they come in hopefully.

Yea I found some rust in mine. How hard is it to switch out the R&P to rotary steering? Do u have to change anything where the tilt tubes are at? From looking at your system it looks identical to mine, so it should be a similar install. Are you going to do the install ur self, and how much does it normally cost?

Re: Major steering problem!!

Well Its not that hard obviusly you need to pull off the R&P system, Have to remove the steering wheel, then 3 screws only plus the ones holding the cables. Take a look to this pics a took last Sat.

Picture 1 Picture 2
Picture 3

Maybe I will ask for a 17 feets cable since this one looks to tight in the first "bending", looks the cable carefully at picture 1. Still thinking in Rotary, did you take your choice already regarding Rotary or Rack & Pinion?

Re: Major steering problem!!

I have know idea what im going to do on choosing a system. I was told my system (R&P) was going to be around 200$, come to find out that it is around 400$, cause it's a dual rack and i have to get a no-feed back cause my hits in the 65mph+ and thats the only way to go for high speed boats to be safe. So I was thinking about the hydro ($1000) steering, since I have to fork over nearly $500 for a R&P. I'm going to check into the roatary steering, but i was told that you cant wrong with a dual rotary or R&P for high speed boats as long as it's no feed back. So I'll keep u posted

Re: Major steering problem!!

How can you tell what type of rack & pinion steering system you have, and where do you find the part numbers?? I'm having the same trouble, very stiff steering. I have a 2000 Charger 295 TF bassboat with a 99 Johnson 150 on the back. I've already eliminated the motor as the trouble, and am now focusing on the cables. I've already cleaned out the tubes, but I need to re-pull them and clean the cables and lube with the litium grease (btw, can you use regular marine grease instead of the white litium?). Anywho, did all that BEFORE I saw the video, hence the re-removal...
So if you can pass on the info I need, it would be a great help!
Thanks!:)

Re: Major steering problem!!

Well my friend I dont know your status but I decided to change my complete system for a NFB 4.2 Rotary system. I have to modified "a little" my console since this style was the original from factory. When I detached the rack and cables there is a lot of grease, the cable teeth doesnt hold additional piece of dirt check. Anyway its took over 6 hours to complete job under a 90 degrees sun . Now the steering is smooth and Im very happy with this system, just left is the test on water. See pictures..

Bass take a look to picture 3 and 5 there you will see both The Rack and Rotary systems. If you already did the cleaning and still stiff then its time to change cables, you can find the number ID at the end of the cable to the transom, use lithium grease only. If there is too much grease thats is a factor to stiff your stearing too, Take a look to this Teleflex Catalog to id your system, If need more info just let me know, glad to help!~:)

Krak..

The steering systems looks good, I been busy w/ class. I see that you have an extra tilt tube that's vacant. Did you go from a dual to a singe? What did you have to modify on your console? I going to replace my whole system, I got it all disconnected and just waiting for my new system. I'll be ordering it Fri or Sat. I still haven't decided what system to go with (Rotary or Rack). Any pros and cons? If i decided to go with rotary system how big of a cut out would I need?

Re: Major steering problem!!

The extrat tilt tube (vacant) is where one of the old cables ran. Yes I went from dual to single cable and its working great, I didnt test it yet on water but It will gonna be fine. The hole for the helm mounting bracket is over 3 3/4inches, the instructions provide a template forthis task. This system is very easy to install, so i recommend you the rotary 4.2 NFB, check picture one to see it. It takes me too long cause I have to dismount a few parts to reach the old cable and pull it out. Rotary vs Rack???? Look here

Modified the following cause I need to pull out the rack system.....
Original (Factory) Bezel - Modified with a Grinder -Final Result

Re: Major steering problem!!

I'm somewhat convinced that the rotary is a little better, but searching rotary vs rack on this site was kind of 50/50 between the two. I would go with rotary, but I couldnt find a concrete anwser why one was better then the other. Since i already have a rack system and it's a little cheaper, i'll probably stick with the rack. I really dont want to take a chance on the rotary not fitting the cut out, cause im ready to fish. Communicating with you has helped a whole lot, Thanks. How fast does your boat travel? Are you just a recreational boater or do you fish also? I'll keep you updated.

Re: Major steering problem!!

Just got my steering system ordered today, so I'll keep the thread updated on my rack system. Unfortunately, the highs are going to be around 40's-50's and the lows 20's-30's, so it want be until next weekend unitil the temp hits 60's to test it out (because I want to fish also). Krat.. keep me updated on your system. This is for anyone that has a rack system, Rotary is easier to install, but the rack system isn't that diffcult to install either. From doing intense research on which mechanical steering is better, I really could not get a clear cut anwser on which one is better (driving). It basically comes down to what space you have under the dash. One rule of thumb i kept coming across was "put back in with what came out"
