There is a boat up the road on a ladies property that was parked 21 years ago uncovered. The boat was 2 years old at the time. It now has trees in it 20 feet high. One tree actually toppled over. The story is that her husband bought the boat to her extreme objections and drowned when he fell overboard the second season he had it. Everyone that knows boats tried to buy it the first few years and we tried to buy it for the big Merc I/O. She just said NO and get off my property and don't come back. Sad he died but I don't know the thinking behind her decision to let it rot. Maybe let it rot like she's hoping he is in Hell is what one oldtimer that knew him said.

She probably knew her husband loved the boat and keeps it for him. Yea seen that with cars, trucks, and boats. I dont know but I personally like boats I build better than ones I buy. So they by not takeing care of them they are supplying habits for people like me.

If she loved him so much why let a new boat just rot away? I'm with MickeyRyan on this one.

They dont see a rotted boat they see their loved one. Why do parents keep the car their kid died in? I know where several of them are. People are diffrent and have strange ways of dealing with grief.

I see that as a future opportunity if its a boat model or style I like. If it stays out long enough, it'll eventually get to the point where damage is obvious and I can get it for cheap. I'm not afraid of a project, and actually prefer, in some cases, to have a boat rebuild/restored as then I know what it's like in the places you can't see... I've also bought neglected boats for the parts so I could either part it out to finance other projects or use parts from one to finish another....

The boat that sat for 21 years reminds me of tractor that has been sitting for about 7 years. Me and my boss at the time went two hours one way to pick it up because it bought it cheap on a internet auction. Loaded it up. drove two hours home unloaded the tractor parked it. The guy has been dead for two years now. I was through town a couple weeks ago and its still sitting there where we parked it when we unloaded it. Back on topic it does not make me sad to see boats sitting out side in the weather. It does however make me more cautious when im buying used boats though.

There is a guy down the road from me who was trying to selling an I/O trihull all summer, likely around 19' long or so. It's on a nice shorelander trailer, and the gelcoat is in great shape. He's moved it around the yard a few times, and it eventually ended up on a spot he leveled off and put up one of those steel garages. It disappeared for a while when the weather started to really turn bad, and then showed back up about a week later. It sat outside uncovered through the first few snow storms we had here until he finally got around to throwing a cheap blue tarp over it. I didn't see any provisions for tarp supports, so I'm betting with the snow we got last night the tarp is already sagging under the weight and will likely collapse soon.

As we drove by it the other night my wife looked over and said "that poor boat!" It should be interesting to see what happens with it next spring.

He also has a nice 57 chevy I've never seen move that sits out by the road. He would throw a tarp over it weighed down with a few old tires for the winter. At least it is now inside his new garage.

Just as an update, I drove by last night and I was right. The tarp is full of snow and collapsed into the boat..... :(

I don't think that the boat down the road that has trees growing out of it will ever be salvageable. I noticed just yesterday when we drove by it that there appears to be roots growing through the bottom of the hull. Maybe it is a "same axe different head different handle" project.

Boat still sits with the bow level, tarp collapsed inside. We got 3 feet of snow in that big Nor'easter last week, all of that is now sitting inside slowly melting away. I bet once the weather finally breaks the for sale sign shows back up on it.

Boats in state of ongoing neglect are hard for me to take, just don't get it at all.
