Hi all, i have a 2005 merc classic 50hp, my brother has a 2002 40hp classic. If you look at any specs, all show the 40, 50 and 60hp classic as having the same bore, stroke, weight, basically the same except for the amount of horsepower. My question would be how can I make my 50 a 60, and could I then take my parts and donate them to my brother so he can make his 40hp a 50hp. I know the easy way to do this is just go and buy another engine, but that would not be as rewarding and would most likely cost much more.

By all means you can swap carbs and redo all the timing, and I hear what you are saying about doing it all yourself... But, and it's a big but... Once you have done all that, you will have 2 bastardized engines... Serial numbers and all decals that say one power and parts from another... Think is the poor swine in 10 years time that has to fix these mongrels....

Much easier and nicer for everybody, now and in the future, to give your 50 to your brother, take his 40, sell it and buy a 60 for yourself.... It'll also be cheaper.

Check the mercury part number for the cylinder blocks in question. Last time I checked the numbers were different. When I asked my friend at the Mercury marine outboard service school, he said that the difference between the two part numbers was intake and exhaust porting. Just something else to look into and think about before you try the swap. Good Luck
