I guess it depends mostly on your comfort-level in dealing with fiberglass. It's not as easy as layin down some mat and goopin' it up - there's a lot more to it. Don't know anything about fiberglass for gas tanks though - aren't they lined with something to keep the fuel from eating the rosin?

Nothing more than opinion:

I would much rather use a fuel cell than try to build my own.

Liability alone, I want something that is manufactorered to do the job. If something ever happens to the boat, the less stuff I've "made" the better.

fuel cell would be your best bet or you can get a 'plastic' tank made

My custom made fiberglass tank made for my Barracuda Hydrocycle was not treated with anything on the inside and it lasted. No leaks, no failures. But the fiberglass to resin ratio was correct.

oops! had a steel tank made for his Ray. It was about $60 for the steel and the welder charged 80 to build it and cut the holes. He bought used steel from a metal recycler. It is a bow tank 4' long so there was several angles and not a regular rectangle.

Anything you make MUST be USCG approved. You may not be able to sell the boat if it requires a survey, and your insurance may be compromised.

It does not really have anything to do with resin to fiberglass ratio. There are different types of resins for different applications. The resins boats are made of are not chemical resistant.
Some types of industrial resin can resist acid and other corrosive chemicals. That?s more likely what was used to make your tank. Industrial resin is not really more expensive. It?s just not really for sale to individuals (not around here anyway).

I do agree with everyone that finds it best to just buy a tank. Making one out of FRP is not really a job for the average Joe.

Doesn't ethanol affect fibreglas? I am of the understanding that this is one of the most troublesom effects.

Yes, some resins are disolved by the ethanol in modern gas.

Althogh the underground storage tanks are FG, so clearly there IS a resin that holds up, just don't know where to point you.

Buy gas WITHOUT the ethanol in it. Ethanol doesnt run too good in a 2 stroke anyway. Mine sure doesnt like it.

that may not be possible at some point in the future, so building something that isn't 100% resistant to ethanol at this point is a very bad idea.
