Re: Making a rear bench seat

Here on the Intracoastal we get very large boats with very large wakes. Everyone generally slows accordingly to the size of the wake and the capability of their boat. Don't beat your boat and your passengers to death on wakes/waves.
My buddy and I have over 30 years combined experience and neither of us saw it coming...you tend to get that when you boat in a lake that goes from 60 feet to less than 5 feet in 100 yards. I know what you mean though!

The ones I saw were these http://veada.com/product/22_10-Boat-Lounge-and-Jump-Seats/286--Jump-Seat.html Not bad for the price but nothing to write home about.

It's funny you posted that link because I was about to post the same one.

ASIDE of "because the manufacturer said so" why can't those be free standing? Is it because they fold out and there's little/no support to the rear? Does anyone think it'd be possible to modify them to properly function as freestanding? Say, 1/8"X2" aluminum bar stock fastened to the base and rear along the sides to provide static support? The reason I ask is they're the same price as the seats I want, come in better color selection and I don't have to buy 160 bucks worth of pedestals for them.

The jump seats I installed in my Jupiter definitely had no rear support so they could not be freestanding. However, the ones I have in my SS look like they took their low back fishing chair and mounted it on a box. It seems to be to be totally rigid and could freestand. Check these out http://www.iboats.com/Wise-Designer...0560351--**********.926430196--view_id.374585 see that diagonal metal bar on the side? That's what my current ones have. You could probably freestand those despite the specs*.

*Disclaimer and stuff :p

I was thinking a larger, heavier version of that diagonal bar and/or a full length bar like I initally proposed would be sufficient but I've never had my hands on a unattached jump seat to know what I would be getting myself in to. I was actually considering a low to mid back fishing chair mounted on a custom made box but I'd like to avoid the "I bolted a low to mid back fishing chair on a plywood box to save money" look at all costs.:)

Both those makes state no freestanding, but this isn't Russia, so one can try anything creative as long you have no issues with safety and possible compliance from "officials" on the water.

That's was I'm thinking but I didn't know if there was a "no way, no how" reason so I thought I'd ask. I suppose the worst that could happen is I get them and have to send them back.

Actually the worst that could happen is a half cocked install with no engineering, a huge fire, bodies everywhere, sinking the boat, and my life and boat insurance expired the day before but I'm trying to stay positive here!

On the post EZ made, that guy using a molly type bolt is pretty neat as it grabs more of the under decking.

The concern on a box seat I would have is merely the fact your "nailer" is made of wood, appears to be a 1x, or 3/4" framing?

I personally would use pedestal for the driver and first mate seats, start combing the CL in your general area, go to some boat boneyards, and always look for boats being parted out if you don't want to buy new ones.
