Hey guys, I have a question about making a tee top. Do I need a heliarc welder and if not what is the exact set-up for welding 2" aluminum pipe used in the tops? My second question is, can I use this pipe bender for my 90 degree bends? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=32888 Thanks, if anyone knows Bondo, I would like to ask him how he did his but there is no way to message people on this forum from what I can find. Thanks

You need a tig to weld aluminium. What you could do is - cut and bend everything, then take it to an engineer to weld. Take a case of beer along.

The pipe bender in your link is o/k for alloy but success would depend on the thickness of said alloy. Fill the pipe with sand first.

Does anyone recommend a particular type of aluminum pipe. I assume its 2" handrail pipe.

So you were able to weld your aluminum with a MIG rig Bondo? Do you need the gas, or is there a way to do it with a gasless wirefeed? I only ask because a T-top is on my list for SB II, and I have been trying to figure out how I am going to do it, no one I know has a TIG outfit, and I don't know of anyone who will hook me up without selling a kidney to pay for it. I have a 110 wirefeed I use for BS-ing around and fixing small stuff.

Anodized is supposed to hold up better under saltwater conditions. It looks from your avatar that your bottom is not painted. My boat will be in the water from March until December in Maryland and will need to hold up as long as possible. I have a friend who has a TIG welder but has not welded anodized aluminum before. Are there any recomendations. I was planning on using 5086 1.5" and its $5 a foot booo.

Bondo, like Jason, I am also interested in HOW you welded alloy with a mig. Did you have to reverse the polarity? Gas or gasless? If gas, what type?

Aldo

Re: Making a teetop - lean too - aluminum top

This,....... is what I used to do My welding,...... I Love this machine,..... Being a Spool In Gun,.... It's Miles Ahead of the Spool in the Box,+ Push the Wire machine I started with,..........
Reasonably Priced Too,..... Only Costs an Arm,.... You can keep your Leg,+ Kidney......... :D

Reverse Polarity Is Required,.....

For Shielding Gas,... I'm using 100% Argon......

And,....... You Gotta Keep Moving,...... Really Fast,......... Speed Welding at it's Finest........
Don't Worry about "Pretty" beads,....... Lay them down,+ Grind them off to get to the "Pretty" stage..........

Jason,....If you want to set your 110V machine up to weld Aluminum,.... You'll need to have Reverse Polarity,+ replace the Liner,+ tip with parts that Haven't been used on Steel..... There'll be Carbon Contamination....... I'm not exactly Sure how it'll run,... My 110V machine is dedicated to Steel,.. Flux-cored welding.... I keep my Redi-welder dedicated to Aluminum......

Cleaning the base metal is the Single Biggest issue with welding Aluminum,...........
The metal Must be polished Clean with a SSteel wire brush,..... If you clean a joint Today,... You'll need to Reclean it just before you weld it Tomorrow.... Aluminum Oxidizes Very Quickly....... A Steel Brush will leave Carbon,+ Contaminate the weld.........

Again,........ Anodized metal is NOT what you want to Build With,...........
If you want an Anodized Top,.... It's Got to be plated AFTER the Assembley.........
Anodized Aluminum Can't be Welded,.....And,.. After you Grind the Anodized coating Off to weld it,.... You Can't Re-Anodize the welded joints,+ have it Match the rest of the tubing,...........

Mine is used in a Freshwater environment,.. Yes,......
I painted mine with a Rustolium Clear Coat,........
Still looking Good after 3 years.............

Next Question,..........???......... ;)

If you've got a MIG that has the spool in the Box,... get some ER5356,... it's Stiffer,+ Harder,.....It'll Push a little better,+ Help with the Jams you're Going to have......
If you've got a Spool in Gun,... Go with the ER4043,.... It's Softer,+ Flows like Butter........

Also,.... Go to a contact Tip that's .005 Larger than the wire you're running,.... It'll help with the Flow,+ reduce the number of Jams that you're Going to have.............. ;)

I'd start with a .030 Wire,+ .035 Tips........

Thanks for the tips Bondo. What I have been trying to do is convince my boss at work that he really really really needs a TIG, since he is obsessed with toys. That way I can use it :)

Re: Making a teetop - lean too - aluminum top

Hey guys I know Bondo did it with a plethra of materials and techniques but what is the normal set up and how is it done? I thought it was anodized aluminum 1.5" tig welded. Does anyone know the welding set up for that. Does it have to be heliarc welded? Thanks

Re: Making a teetop - lean too - aluminum top

Regardless of the material I am welding, I use a tip 0.2mm bigger than the wire, and nozzle dip - great stuff.

Well,.....
As I said,...... Anodized metal Can't be Welded,..... With ANY welding process.......
If you want an Anodized tower,.... It's Got to be Anodized AFTER it's Built...............
Aaaahhh,..... Tig Welded,....????
Or it Could be Migged......
heliarc welded
Heliarc Was a term used back when Helium was used as a shielding gas,............That's No Longer the Case........
It can be Tigged,.... Or Migged........ There is No Heliarc anymore......
It's Either Tigged with Argon shielding gas,.....
Or Migged with Argon shielding gas.........
Helium is No Longer Used.........

If you want to Build it Yourself,......
You can set-up a Mig Welder for a Few Hundred Dollar$...........
Or,... You can set-up a Tig Welder for Several Thousand Dollar$............

Your Choice............. ;)
