Re: "Making Oil" FAQ?
There are a couple of oil sites. The one I have seen pop up most often is http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/ with their forums , similar to this one on , http://theoildrop.server101.com/cgi/ultimatebb.cgi
If you look down the lists you will see two groups. One is for VOA or Virgin Oil Analysis ( this has nothing to do with olives
) and UOA or Used oil.The chances are that somebody already has done a VOA on any oil you can think of. Since those samples will not have seen an engine they are 0% for any compounds such as gasolene,anti-freeze, carbon etc. That should give you a baseline you can work from from. The UOA postings are mainly around car engines but the principals are the same. Copper and lead are used in main bearings , iron/chrome/tin in the rings and block, aluminium head/pistons , you get the idea. You would expect a huge jump in metalic components at the first run as the engine beds in and then dropping away quite quickly. Unfortunatly there are no UOA's on outboards so this is breaking new ground.
As an aside sodium is tested for, it would be interesting to know if this would tell the difference between salt water ingress as opposed to condensate. Looking at other UOA's from cars a fuel dilution of around 0.5 to 1% seems to be common.
