PMC,

Love it! The support/harrasment from the forum is great. The comments help me understand why I'm the way I am too. I never saw a boat I didn't like. The classic look of the closed bow - glad to see yours will be preserved. Have you decided on a re-power donor rig? After reading about the newer Volvo packages I would consider looking for one of them too - maybe an insurance salvage (not from sinking). Nice work on the transom. I'll be following your thread too.

When I did my Crestliner project the first thing my better half did was put together a leger sheet and a large envelope labeled "Money Pit". She said if you won't take everyone's advice and just buy a nice boat, will you at least keep up with what you spend on this one?" - I did...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

MrLassi - Thanks for stopping by... Appreciate the kind words.... I have picked up a donor rig... a 96 (glasser) starcraft with a 350/merc (alpha 1, gen II). Should be good power (its buried somewhere in the midst of 27 pages of chatter and heckling).

Okay... for a little update, so you can see what I have been up to:

First, another "sandwich" of csm/1708 on the backside of the transom (that makes 3 sandwiches, 6 layers):

Angle view -

Then, I re-measured my x-dimension, grabbed the cut-out from the donor boat and "stenciled-in" my new key-hole:

Then, I got a 3 inch hole saw to see how thick my transom was (got lucky...right at 2 inches).

Well, actually I may have over-sanded a tad; Turns out I'm a little (about .005) short:

And, last but not least, we have a key-hole and what is starting to look like transom:

Gots some vids to upload and hope to post in the next day or so... Hope you guys are well!!!

thanks for hanging out and helping out!

Now put the key in it and lets get rolling, lol:D Looks amazing man, you have done a great job on that transom. Its nice to see a freshly cut hole with no rott for a change isn't it.;)

And you still have some curve in the transom, I seen it, I know I seen it,lol:D Great job buddy.

Well done, looks like a right fine job all around: glassing, layout, cut out, etc etc etc

It's now official, no going back to the old White leg of despair....:D And that's a good thing!

Starting off the mid-week pretty good based on the pix above! Have a good rest of the week!

Thanks for dropping in guys!.... The support (and, equally important, the sarcastic humor) are much appreciated....

SP: On your question.... Yes, once you cut the key hole, you really need to do some water proofing on the edge... I threw some resin on it last night just to soak into the wood. I will put a layer or 2 of csm in their for some good water proofing...

Thanks again!!! Have a great day.

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

hi patrick....

looks great...JUST MARVELLOUS

one thing...

the bottom tabbing of what looks like 1708 (from the bottom of the key hole to the hull)

im just a little worried about flatness and parelellism here.

you may have to knock some of that down a tad....

the housing gasket on the out side will take that up.....but it might cause the inner plate to be at an angle.
it looks like you will still be with in tolerances....but you just might want to check it with a gauge.

one other thing i want to point out....

you were kicking around the idea of the open bow....

the reason you even thought of doing it was because you have found out that this glassing stuff aint near as bad or as hard as all the koolaid slurping, reevit bashing, pop can boat guys say it is.
and it really looks like you have gotten the hang of it.

good job bud.

now its just a short stringer/deck job....

now you can really fly...

Re: Man vs. Boat (season 1).

oh....by the way......that first round hole you cut in the transom....the one with the measuring tape ?

that cross section of the transom plys is EXACTLY what a text book transom looks like.....it does not get any better than that.

no voids.....all the correct thickness....each laminated section even.......thing of beauty !

Wow, thanks for compliments Oops... I feel like "daniel-son" getting a nod of approval from Mr. Miyagi...

Yeah, on the tabbing, I actually put that on there before I cut the key hole... Sort of weird that it lined up just right below the cut.... I had not thought about knocking it down... that's a really good point/suggestion (why I post the pics...)...

I have no idea what Ward is yammerin on about here:rolleyes:

Keeping with the Karate Kid theme..... He's talking about you and all the other guys from the Cobra-Kai Dojo.... You guys will do anything (sweep the leg) when it comes to taking out a glasser....
